Jim Krause has worked as a designer in the Pacific Northwest since the 1980s. He has produced award-winning work for clients large and small, including Microsoft, McDonald's, Kodak, Cingular Wireless, Washington Apples, Bell Helicopter, Levi Strauss, Paccar/Kenworth, Northern Trust and Seattle Public Schools.

Interesting ideas about what to photograph

When I purchased a good DSLR camera last year, I also acquired a couple of how-to books to better learn the technical aspects of digital photography. They have been quite useful but they are primarily about the mechanics of photography. This book and the others in this series by Mr. Krause have helped me better understand the creative side of photography. Although there is some instruction about how to take photos, this is more about ideas, as noted in the title. I have not read the book from beginning to end but tend to jump around to what looks interesting when I pick it up. I am learning to look around and see the potential for photographs in my surroundings as a result. I see this book as an opportunity for a professional photographer to share his experience in deciding what to photograph rather than how to photograph.

Very disappointing...

With all due respect, this is not a very good collection of photographs from which to learn or be inspired. It's just a collection of (arguably average) photographs. The reader would be much better served buying Richard I'Anson's books. He's the staff photographer for Lonely Planet and he does a great job of explaining the theory and practice of photography along with world class examples from which to learn.

Must have!

I have every book written by this guy. One of his books, Design Ideas Index, was required reading for a graphic design course and I read it cover to cover in the first week because not only is the content good but it is displayed in an amazingly lighthearted and no-nonsence kind of way. These books (things, people, and places) in addition to the Photo Idea Index are more of the same great writing that made me so happy last term! Great job and a must for just starting out and for the experienced to switch it up!
