A lucid introduction to Deleuze--that might change your life

This is a great, beautiful and timely book. It introduces Deleuze's philosophy by first of all having us think about a problem central to Deleuze's philosophy, the question "How might one live?" From this question, May unfolds Deleuze's ontology of difference and his views of life, thinking, science, language, teaching and politics. The book is compelling and highly accessible-and does something no other book on Deleuze that I know of does-precisely because it gets us to see Deleuze's point not simply through Deleuze's difficult writing and novel concepts, but through a familiar question that each one of us might live. And so May takes us into an enormous and rich field of life, from Prigogine's and Monod's science of chaos and chance, to the Palestinian intifada, to the life of John Coltrane, to life in urban America, to erotics.
Gille Deleuze: An Introduction is a book not simply for the scholar or the student, but for the one who might want to live differently, who might want to see how thinking differently about the world and life can open a different way of living. It might change your life. It might not. It should be read.

A fairly solid introduction to Deleuze...

There are two general introductions to the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze that I feel comfortable recommending to the first time reader of Deleuze. One is this book by Todd May, and the other is Gilles Deleuze (Routledge Critical Thinkers) by Claire Colebrook. In some ways I think that Claire Colebrook's book is slightly more accessible, but they both have different focuses so I recommend reading both.

Todd May structures his interpretation around the question "How might one live?" This is a different question from the one that has traditionally been asked in Western philosophy, "How should I live?" Todd May begins his book on Deleuze by explaining the difference between these two questions, and by relating Deleuze's attempt to answer this question to similar attempts made by philosophers like Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. Foucault and Derrida ask a similar question but, unlike Deleuze, they consider a general critique of ontology as a necessary first step in opening the possibility of asking such a question. It is ontology, and metaphysics, which attempts to determine the essence of beings, as well as their possibilities, which tends to stifle the question "How might one live?" since one's possibilities are already determined by one's essence. Deleuze does not reject ontology, but attempts to work out an ontology that allows for the possibility of the new, and creative transformation.

This leads Deleuze to prioritize difference over identity. This is actually one of the more difficult aspects of Deleuze's philosophy to grasp because it is one of Deleuze's contentions that representation is incapable of grasping difference in itself. Representation always subordinates difference to identity and the identity of the concept. Traditional ontology begins, for example, with the highest generalities (genus) and determines them through difference (species) until it reaches the individual. In other words, it works from the top down, and in so doing subordinates difference to the identity of the concept. Deleuze's ontology works from the bottom up by starting with pure differences which lie behind the processes of individuation and speciation. These differences, however, cannot be represented since representation lives in the element of the concept.

Todd May comes up with what I think is a good analogy for how it is still possible to talk about difference despite the fact that it escapes representation. Todd May argues that Deleuze attempts to palpate difference. I actually had to look up the term, as it was not a term I was familiar with, but it is the method that doctors use when they try to determine the size, shape, firmness and location of something by pressing on an area of the body. This is what the doctor is doing, apparently, when they press on your abdomen and ask you where it hurts. Deleuze is doing something similar. Deleuze is attempting to see difference by tracing the effects it has on the world with which we are all familiar. Palpation seems to me to be a good analogy for what is usually called the transcendental method of argumentation. You cannot see something directly, but we can infer its existence through its effects.

Todd May uses his guiding question, "How might one live?" as an organizing principle as he makes his way through Deleuze's interpretations of Spinoza, Bergson, Nietzsche, philosophy, science, language, and politics, and also attempts to explain how difference is present within all of these fields, and the effects difference has in all of these fields. All in all I would say this is a very successful introduction to one of the most important philosophers of the previous century.

Excellent

As someone who is well-versed in Foucault, less so in Deleuze (and not at all in Derrida), I found the first chapter of this book to be a lovely simple yet fruitful little exposition situating these three titans of contemporary French philosophy as three distinctive responses to the Nietzschean legacy. Further, May helpfully distinguishes Deleuze in a way that separates him from Foucault/Derrida on the question of ontology. Now, these may be obvious/broad distinctions, but since this is an introduction, it is appropriate, and the text is written in a way that is very useful/accessible for english-speaking philosophers who may be unfamiliar (or worse) with Deleuze and other French philosophers.

I really enjoyed and highly recommend some of May's other works (e.g. the one on poststructuralist anarchism and between genealogy and epistemology on foucault), but I think this is perhaps his best; an elegant and powerful contribution that fills an important need--making Deleuze more readily accessible to students and anglophone philosophers.

Evan Osnos is a staff writer at The New Yorker, where he served as the China correspondent from 2008 to 2013. He is the winner of two Overseas Press Club awards and of the Asia Society’s Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia. Previously, he worked at the Chicago Tribune, where he was part of a team that won the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting in 2008. Osnos lives in Washington, D.C.

A rare balance

China books seem especially tricky to write, because the writer has to please two very different types of American reader: the one who has a great deal of experience with China, and the one who does not. The first reader cringes if he has to read yet another description of how Shenzhen used to be a fishing village; but the second reader can't really understand Shenzhen unless you explain this fact. (As a strange hybrid of these two readers -- I lived in China but have no deep expertise in its history -- I often experience the worst of both worlds.)

This book strikes a rare balance. It's a very absorbing read, and its multiple story-lines are impressively woven together, without any of the stitches showing. The people Osnos writes about run the gamut from a public figure like Lin Yifu (the World Bank economist who defected to mainland China from Taiwan in 1979) to an obscure figure like Michael Zhang, a young energetic optimist whom Osnos first meets at a Crazy English conference and then follows for a few years. (Zhang turns into one of the most interesting characters in the book.)

Osnos tells all these individual stories against the backdrop of most of the major events in China of the last five years: the violence in Xinjiang, the Liu Xiaobo fiasco, the "Jasmine" events of 2011, Ai Weiwei's ordeal, the flight of Chen Guangcheng, the Bo Xilai scandal, the bullet train crash, and so on. You learn a great deal about all these events, but the book is anchored in its very humane profiles of individual Chinese who are trying to make their lives better.

a book for Americans

I am a Chinese in the USA. An American friend recommended this Age of Ambition to me, saying it's amazing. But I found myself almost gave up when I read the first chapter on the Taiwan defector Lin Zhengyi. This is a story you can find on wikipedia, and lots of Chinese are very familiar with Lin Zhengyi too. I guess Americans will find it interesting, never mind. I decided to read on since I liked the writing style. The people and their stories in this book are nothing new to me. Even Ai Weiwei's part, I would just go to watch the movie Never Say Sorry again. The more I read, the more I think something is missing. Seems Mr. Even Osnos is keen on predicting the future of China. But the characters in his book are not representing the whole picture. I am not saying Hu Shuli, Lin Zhengyi or Han Han are pass�, just the grass-root young strivers in the book are not those who are more likely to take over the throne. China is a elite society, even if you don't like the children of the officials, of the rich business men's, the truth is they are educated(some overseas) and have resources. They are more likely to govern the country in the future. I don't know why there is no voice from this group. If you are talking about ambitions, without input from that group, the picture of new China the author draws is just not completed. But again, for those who don't live in China, or never experience the culture, it's a good read.

A great look at sociological shifts in modern China

If you've been following Osnos's New Yorker pieces, you know he has a gift for finding seemingly eccentric anecdotes and using them to explain a larger point. In this new book, he takes that a step further and illustrates the overwhelming social change that has taken place in China over the past fifty years through the experiences of individuals that have lived through it. It's a wonderfully readable blend of idiosyncratic stories and insightful analysis that brings any reader, whether new to the topic or an experienced China watcher, a greater understanding of this emerging force in world events.

I love this whole series. I really enjoyed the raw passion in this story and I'm not talking about the sex. You could feel the despair and a little hope in each sentence. Good job, Maisey Yates.

Not your typical feel good, sweet romance but not a bad read

Hold Me Cowboy is the latest book in the Cooper Ridge series and is Sam McCormack and Madison West’s story. He's a sexy and gruff cowboy/blacksmith/ artist. He finds Madison a prickly ice princess snob. They're both damaged, living in hurt and trying to keep people from getting close to them. They have a general irritation and dislike for each other but that gives way to scorching heat and passion. This is not your typical feel good, sweet, romance read. They each have emotional damage from their pasts that they have not been able to let go of it. It starts off as just a weekend of sex, then extended to 12 days with the end to be at Christmas. Their arrangement leads to healing and love. It is set around Christmas time but it is not a heartwarming holiday story. Hold Me Cowboy is well written. Though I didn’t really like the characters or feel a connection for them, I think they were perfect for the type of story that was told. And honestly, not every relationship is built around sweetness and romance. This is the first book by this author for me. I will most likely check out the earlier books in the series as those characters were mentioned in this story and I’m curious about them.

Much of the intensity of Spiritual Instrument derives from this blurring of the internal and the external, self and space.

The book consists of three sections--The Event, The Ritual, The Beyond--which contain four pieces each. The most impressive piece from the first section is "Cable TV." It begins with a lonely insomniac who, on a long cold night, comforts himself with a jazz radio show while watching television on mute. Both the radio and TV content receive their own narrative in vertical columns, so that the reader can choose a variety of ways to read: alternately, separately or simultaneously. As the narratives proceed, the gentle banalities of the radio host--what is heard--begin to clash with what is seen: vague images of violence and eroticism, a young boy staring directly into the camera, a daytime talk show gone ridiculously wrong, etc. The viewer becomes emotionally confused between his need for vicarious communication and his sympathy felt for those who silently suffer behind the screen. These contrasting visual and auditory narratives create an effect of cognitive dissonance which is equally amusing and unsettling. In short, Kitchell has created, in a very emotive way, the kind of absurd entertainments that occasionally appear on commercial access channels.

The next most exemplary piece of experimental narrative, "Secret Instructions," comes from the Ritual section. It involves another anonymous man who, while converting his nondescript apartment to a primal, ceremonial space, comes across a box containing a tape and fairly detailed though apparently arbitrary instructions. The tape and its instructions point to the thematic clusters spread throughout the book: death sex, violence, primal materials such as wood and stone, the creation of new spaces, etc. Through watching the tape--certain scenes indicating that others have encounter and added their own content--the nameless narrator becomes as actively involved in the building of narrative as the reader is in comprehending or, at least, experiencing it. Strongly evocative of Dennis Cooper, this piece uses layered narratives in such a subtle, peripheral way that the reader is taunted into believing what he or she does not or cannot believe.

Another brilliantly experimental piece--and my favorite of the entire collection--"Black Metal" concerns a young boy who, believing a certain sand dune is the burial site of the sun, falls into a sand pit where he remains interred. The first most striking aspect is that Kitchell's decision to make the pages of this story white-on-black does not reduce to mere gimmickry. This color-inversion of the page transfers the boy's claustrophobia to the reader; further, the words themselves become the former whiteness of the page, scribbled absences on the the surface of impossibility.

Beyond this typographical trick, the arrangement of the narrative is highly effective. Passages that speak of the boy's life prior to his interment occur along the margins of the page, while those involving his dreams and thoughts within the black metal box have been written at the center; this further increases the claustrophobic sense already established by the aforementioned color-inversion. Effectively contorting the temporality of the narrative to an even greater extent, the boy, while still trapped within the black box, frequently sees images of a nearly identical child in a glass case. Though one could easily explain these episodes as hallucinations, each part of the narrative merges to suggest that perhaps the boy has at last reached the synthesis of every dissociated strand of self.

While I can't say every experiment--in narrative, typography, etc.--is a complete success, Spiritual Instrument's break with conventional modes of communication often results in lucid glimpses into the heights and depths of limit-experiences where the self becomes so rarefied that only the body remains as a wound in space. Less given to cheaply transgressive exploitations than most of his fellow underground experimentalists, Kitchell seeks to abide within the space that does not echo the individual's cry for the fulfillment of desire, meaning and significance, but rather opens up to consume the perverse excesses of self-conscious being. Only then can consciousness expel the "I"--the superfluity of being human--and float its way back into the silent world of things.

To close, here's a powerful passage from the first piece, "Postparoxysmal Event Space":

Waking up, tangled in sweat and sheets, the man discovers he is coming, and not only coming, but spasming, splitting the air in contortion, enacting the violence of depths, the spurting not patterned in burst but instead continual, as if man himself could become volcano and spill ruin onto civilization, a ruin powered by the solar complexities of telluric drama: a satisfaction. The body stills, the room is silent. And with this, the cavernous buzzing regains its presence.
