Excellent Review Book

I've read all of David Hough's books and find this to be an excellent distillation of the basic safety pointers from those books, which in turn, are based on his years of writing safety columns for motorcycle publications. I carry it in my saddlebag for review when I feel like stopping and doing some refresher reading. I just purchased another for my wife's scooter, so that should support what I've said. It is not a replacement for his "Proficient" books, but a reminder in condensed form. Prevents me from reverting to bad and unsafe habits on my rides, not taking the ride environment for granted or losing focus. David's hundreds of thousands of miles on motorcycles under all conditions, from the 1960's with initial riding experience that parallels my own in the '60's, stands him in good stead as a pioneer in motorcycle safety and awareness, and the mental aspect of the ride. Being of similar age, I can relate. He has had a couple of serious accidents, one seemingly unavoidable with a large object falling off a truck in front of him, the other on a solo desert road, and now rides a trike, none of which weakens his discussions in these books. The excellent illustrations also drive home his points. Obviously I recommend all of them.

Perfect for your coffee break

Having already read Proficient Motorcycling and More Proficient Motorcycling, I decided to purchase Street Strategies despite some reviews indicating its redundancy of material from the first two books.

Street Strategies is the perfect book for your coffee break reading. It is physically small and easily fits in a desk drawer. Yes, the scenarios in the book are covered in Mr. Hough's first two books but their layout in this book allows you to jump in anywhere in the text. There is no need to start at page one and read to the end.

Just open up the book anywhere and read about a specific stand-alone scenario with Mr. Hough's expert analysis of how to handle that particular situation.

This helpful book enables both the novice and seasoned rider to maintain a good mental focus when riding by allowing you to review actual scenarios and their solutions prior to hitting the road.

Nothing will ever replace a professionally run "Rider's Education" course but this book is a nice supplement to have around.

Entertaining stories with useful morals

Street strategies is a collection of "stories" that are part or all of articles written by David Hough. The stories are entertaining and similar (if not identical in some cases) to stories contained in Proficient Motorcycling.
This is more of a waiting room kind of book. Very short chapters with cartoon diagrams that give the reader insight into the type of dangers that he/she might encounter in the real world of motorcycle riding and some advice on how to avoid them. It lacks the detail that makes Proficient Motorcycling and More Proficient Motorcycling such excellent training guides for riders.
This book might make a good stocking stuffer for someone who has already read the other books but if your looking for something for a starting/experienced rider pick one of the other two books (Proficient Motorcycling for the starter, "More" for the more experienced rider).

I love it!

The first time I read Jane Eyre I was ten years old and instantly mesmerized. I’ve been rereading it ever since but it never occurred to me to read a book ABOUT Jane Eyre. When I ran across this book on Amazon, totally by accident, the easy informative writing style seduced me into buying it. And am I ever glad.

The author’s scope is large, including not just Bronte’s personal life and writing but socio-economic and literary events and influences. She lived in a time of extreme change, only some of which Bronte herself saw in her secluded Yorkshire countryside. Until the time in which Bronte lived and wrote, poetry was the dominant form of literature that ordinary people read for enjoyment. Now the novel became popular. Industry transitioned from individual artisans and crafters to a complex of factories. A stratified class system cracked and made way for a middle class where money and accomplishment trumped birth. Capitalism was born. Slavery was abolished in the British Empire. And certain enterprising women started to question the heretofore sacred roles of men and women. Bronte consciously made Jane plain and insignificant as opposed to her sisters’ orthodox portrayal of feminine beauty.

Ms. Brennan traces literary criticism of Jane Eyre starting with Bronte’s own time until today. When it was first published it was damned as anti-Christian! Bronte’s unflattering assessment of clergymen and her struggle to balance Christian ideals with human passion were not well received in all circles. Speeding through time to the 1970s, feminist activism prompted great interest in Jane Eyre. Other critics followed their own passions, including certain Marxist studies (!!!) and explorations of the British colonialism that shaped Bertha, Mr. Rochester’s first wife, and produced the fortune Jane eventually inherited.

I could go on detailing the delights of this book, such as Jane’s relationship with the moon, and Bronte’s use of natural imagery, lyric language, and the four elements to describe Jane’s inner states. Instead I will simply suggest that anyone interested in Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte, and her era will enjoy reading this book. I give this book five stars.

Still the Best of Taleb

Fooled by Randomness revolutionized how I view the world. In multiple ways. It's hard to overstate how rarely a book changes your ideas about how the world works once, let alone multiple times, and that Taleb has managed to weave a fantastically engaging and entertaining book out of what could very easily be a dry and technical topic is just icing in the cake.

I've read all four of Taleb's books and Fooled By Randomness still stands out as my favorite. Although Black Swan is still the most popular, and most controversial, Fooled in many ways is the most practical, as it's the most general and therefore most widely applicable. Everyone should deeply understand the survivorship and hindsight biases, as well as the difference between conditional and unconditional probability.

That being said, it's often hard to determine whether the heart of the book is the ideas (which to someone such as myself who has only a Stats 101 background in probability are almost always revelation-inducing) or the author. I can't stress how much I learned from this book that has nothing to do with probability or statistics, just random asides from an erudite and meandering mind. Regardless of your background (or even your interest in probability) you will probable learn some fascinating and/or useful tidbit from Fooled, and probably a whole lot more.

Will change your perspective on the role of luck in your success

Fooled by randomness is a book that will change your perspective about life success and chance, if you are in a profession where making predictions on highly uncertain fields is your daily bread, this book will help you realize that sometimes success is mostly a product of luck, not to say that all people involved on economics, stock markets, big CEOs, sales people, etc. are purely successful by luck, but sometimes they (and I include myself) give greater credit for ability and knowledge more than luck, this situation expose you to a great danger: a big failure event (or the black swan as described by Nassim)
Is far better to be aware of this problem with randomness and take all possible precautions to avoid a big catastrophe (this really is what counts in terms of managing a good streak of good chance). With basic and logical examples Taleb explains really good (or at least makes you think about it) how the human brain tries to match great events due to expertise and not luck (but always on hindsight) and bad luck to randomness. If you have some profession where success is not as straight forward related as a dentist maybe (his favorite example on the book) or something not as deterministic but instead more economic or social statistical involved role, reading Fooled by Randomness will change your perspective and help you to be prepared for the black swan event

Less generalizable than Black Swan but still helpful for understanding scope, scale, and context of information

Useful and insightful perspectives from Taleb on the subject he is famous for, but as a book it is more scattered than "Black Swan." The general theme of the book is randomness, but he jumps from topic to topic, e.g. options trading to historical narrative to behavior psychology to journalism, back to trading, back to journalism, etc.

Although the book does try to be relevant to non-financial market professions and decisions, it feels to me much less generalizable than "Black Swan." He even uses a term like "randomness professions" or something (I can't remember) to distinguish those that are from those that aren't, but gives few examples outside of financial markets, and I suspect most non-traders will feel like the book isn't quite written for them. (I think a lot of people like the book just because he dumps on financial professionals, and there is recent popular sentiment that those guys aren't as smart as they think they are and deserve to be taken down a peg or two.)

Anyway, as a non-trader I found Taleb's ideas in this book broadened the way I think about how information comes to me, what it represents, what is missing from it, and how I make decisions based on it.

Dreaming Up America

This is a carefully constructed critique of American culture from the time of Columbus until the present. What we do today and how we think is driven by our background. We are a new country compared to much of the world. The factors that brought our forefathers to the Americas and the ease with which the European invasion expanded across the continent are major factors in who we are today.

This book is drawn from interviews conducted in preparation for a documentary produced in France. In part, the intent was to correct images of America that non-Americans draw from popular movies. Banks has edited that material after the documentary has been translated into several languages. The maturity of the ideas in the book shows the refinement of this period of reflection. However, it still comes across at times that Banks is talking to a different audience than his countrymen. Many readers will consider that an enhancement since we too seldom try to look at ourselves as others see us.

Early in the book, Banks introduces three factors (he calls them dreams) that he believes have strongly influenced us since colonial times, and are still a strong part of our national motivation. He terms those factors The City of Gold, The City on the Hill, and The Fountain of Youth. I urge readers to keep those factors in mind as they read and reread "Dreaming Up America." Other factors are important as well. Banks considers the Constitution and Declaration of Independence to be inspired documents whose full power hasn't yet been realized in American culture. Banks joins others in seeing racial influences at the root of every aspect of American society. Consider European treatment of the indigenous American people, slavery, and how our view of other people is influenced by whether they look like us or are different. Banks calls America "a country that was invented out of many parts" and thus we think and act differently than more homogeneous populations with longer histories.

These various factors are often in opposition to one another. Thus our society is often under tension. At times this is positive; it motivates us to move ahead. Far too often it leads to violence, both within ourselves and our actions toward others.

Not every reader will appreciate Banks' perspective. It would be unfortunate if that kept them from closely examining the points that he makes. Most Americans would benefit from reading this book twice through. It doesn't take long to read but the thought and discussions that it fosters endure much longer.

Holy smokes! Highly useful "braiding," as Banks calls it

To add to review #1 (which is nicely complete), what I found useful was Banks' characterization of three "strands" in American psycho-history:

1) Escape from religious persecution, found a "new Jerusalem on a hill" (North-east);

2) "Mere" capitalism, exploitation, commerce (Mid-Atlantic, Caribbean. Spanish, mostly

3) Start from scratch, build a new life, find the fountain of youth. (many Europeans, including Ponce deLeon, of course, rummaging around in Florida.

Banks calls these, in another articulation, the three Cs--Christianity, Capitalism and Civilization.

Our big problem? The wee, itty-bitty delta between what we say and what we do. I've added the paragraphs to this one-paragraph excerpt, from pp 96, 97:

p. 96 THE PERIOD we're going through right now in the US, in terms of Iraq and the Middle East particularly, in many ways isn't an aberrant period at all. It's typical of America's view of our proper relationship with the rest of the world. Not even the intensity of our involvement is aberrant. Look at Panama, at Vietnam, at Korea, Or, in the earlier nineteenth century, at the Philippines, at cuba. We are and historically have been very involved in other parts of the world, exploiting people and lands as much as any other colonial power, in Asian, African and South American countries.

But in the American imagination, we're only doing that to avoid leaving them to their own terrible troubles. So there's a conflict between the reality of the nineteenth century -- between the nature of our involvement with Mexico, the Caribbean, Liberia, West Africa, and later our involvement in the Philippines and in Asia in the earlier twentieth century , and the rhetoric and imagery we use to describe that involvement. So much of American violence arises because of the conflict between the reality of our lives and the perception of our lives, the way we imagine ourselves.

This goes back to the early colonists in New England and Virginia and the Carolinas, who were basically committing a kind of genocide against the native people, but claimed they were saving them for Civilization, Christianity, and Capitalism. In fact they were killing them and stealing their land, but they never looked at it that way. So there was a huge conflict between what they said they were doing and what they were actually doing.

And that kind of conflict in any human being, in any people, makes for a predictable explosive violence. D.H. Lawrence said, "The essential American soul is hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer." He was pointing at the consequences of the American split between perception of self and reality. The killer is someone who would rather take a life than have to resolve that conflict between self-perception and reality.

It's a good read, and his points are interesting (even when ...

This strikes me more as magazine content than a book, though not for the usual reasons I feel this way about a book. Usually, there isn't enough content to justify the book. In this case, it's simply that it's much more conversational than analytic, and there is little if any evidence given to support Banks's claims.

The book is conversational because it was transcribed from Banks talking about America, and that also explains the lack of specifics supporting his points.

It's a good read, and his points are interesting (even when I disagreed), there's just not a lot to it. Worth the read, as long as your expectations aren't too high. (I probably would have given it 3.5 stars if that were an option.)

As English professors with large teaching loads at small colleges, we have had the opportunity to teach a considerable number of literature courses at every level of college education, from first-year introductory courses through graduate seminars. Although many of our sophomore students may have been exposed to the rudiments of literary study as first-year students, it has become apparent to us that a good many students seem to have difficulty retaining what they have learned about critical reading, analytical writing, and research and documentation methods into their second-year literature surveys. We have also begun encountering transfer students from schools that do not require literature and composition courses for first-year students. Such students have upon occasion been thrust into college-level literature courses where they are expected to read critically and analytically, to write thoughtful and concise papers of literary analysis, and to perform competent literary research. These expectations are difficult enough to meet for sophomores who have had the benefit of first-year instruction in literature but exceedingly difficult to meet for students like the transfers we noted or students who have exempted their first-year class through placement exams.

At the same time, like many other professors, we have become somewhat dissatisfied with many standard first-year literary texts. Although some of the pedagogical apparatus included in such texts is very fine, often the anthology of included works doesn't live up to the sections on writing. Similarly, several excellent anthologies seem to contain very little in the way of useful pedagogy. A text containing very good notes on critical theory, for example, may contain nothing on Modern Language Association (MLA) documentation. Finding supplemental texts that let us teach literature from a variety of anthologies and primary sources while at the same time not sacrificing any of the pedagogy proved quite difficult. We have also had problems in finding texts that were suitable for students who were still learning to read critically and to write analytically or who needed to be refreshed on the fundamental rules of literary research before being asked to make use of theory in a paper.

Our goal in this book, then, is to provide a practical guide for students entering literary study This text is intended as a supplementary text for survey of literature courses and is written and designed to be useful and accessible for the undergraduate student. We have particularly focused on sophomores and on first-year students who are taking courses that use literature anthologies or other texts without pedagogical apparatus.

A Practical Introduction to Literary Study begins by focusing on critical reading and the literary canon and introduces students to the tools, terms, and methods they need for discussing literature. It also contains chapters on practical research methods, on understanding criticism and using it in papers, and on MLA documentation. We have also included a brief overview of critical theory that should prove useful in courses designed for introducing new upper-division students to the English major. We have used boldface to indicate important literary terms throughout the text that are defined in the glossary at the back of the book.

Although A Practical Introduction to Literary Study does include a small number of readings to help illustrate various points throughout the text, this book is not intended to function as an anthology or to replace any of the excellent anthologies instructors use in their classes. Instead, we have for the most part chosen short, commonly taught or relatively straightforward texts in order to facilitate classroom instruction. The readings have been kept to a minimum because the text is intended to be supplemental to other literature texts; we realize that instructors may often wish to choose alternative works to teach the lesson at hand. Some readings are incorporated into the chapter for the convenience of the instructor and students; others are contained in Part Six of the book.

Above all else, this book is intended to be understandable and useful to the beginning student as well as to the more advanced student. We have included Thinking Exercises throughout the book that instructors may assign if they wish; these exercises are tailored to provoke further thought in students who are learning how exciting and stimulating literary studies can truly be.

CHANGED MY LIFE

A book this outstanding is rare, as I can see from the customer reviews many have perceived. Paglia's book, which I read when I was 17, crystallized my thoughts on art, sexuality, and human nature: like her I was a freakish female fan of Oscar Wilde, the gay male sensibility, and decadence. I had truly been searching for this book since I was 13 years old and got my first adult public library card, and thereby discovered the endlessly fascinating world of literature and art--the existence of which I'd never suspected. I'll never forget sitting down with this book during Grade 12 Spring Break; my mother and little sisters were away visiting relatives, so I had the house to myself during the day and I sat in the dining room from the time my step-father left for work at about 7 am to the time he returned about 5 pm, reading. It was by far the longest and most difficult book I had ever read, and I took time over it because as other customer reviewers have pointed out, Paglia addresses such profound, disturbing ideas in such original, provocative ways that I did no less than go over my whole life in my head from my earliest memories to test Paglia's ideas. Needless to say, Paglia won more often than not: the myth of original sin is a better explanation of art and human nature than the myth of social constructionism.
If you are truly open to ideas and you love art, don't read this book unless you want your life completely changed for better or worse. Almost ten years later I find myself completely intellectually alienated from both peers and most professors in my university English program because I continue to fight UNCOMPROMISINGLY for art and independent thought (not to mention intellectual rigour and standards and good prose!), thanks to Paglia's inspiration. But it makes it worthwhile when I come on amazon.com and see that others have felt the same way I do. For you others, if you're looking for other *special* works of criticism (neither the run-of-the-mill merely accurate kind nor postmodern drivel), I recommend George Toles's A House Made of Light: Essays in the Art of Film and Stanley Cavell's Pursuits of Happiness: The Hollywood Comedy of Remarriage. If you read them after Paglia you'll have some balance, too, since Toles and Cavell emphasize the link between art and morality, while treating the subject with the complexity it deserves.

Caveat Lector!

First Off: There's no way I'm going to cram into a thousand words everything I feel I need to say about this book. Thus, I'll stick to what I regard as the bare bones of its import. The first thing you have to realize is just how much Paglia owes to her mentor, Harold Bloom. I would strongly advise any potential readers of this book to read both The Visionary Company and The Western Canon before embarking into this scintillating morass, however unrealistic an expectation that may be.
This book, despite all the lip service given to the "Appolonian," is deluged with the Chthonian, and the reader will come away from this tome besplattered with the mud and slime of the swampy Chtonian Nature of the world than anything else. Mind you, there's nothing contradictory in this result. It is indeed just what the much-praised Appolinian artist does, according to Paglia: Reveal the Chthonian with a voyeuristic, Spencerian eye. This Paglia does with an elan and flair unmatched in critical writing.
But beware! Paglia, like Bloom, is reductionist. Bloom's ultimate take on more or less the same subject matter with which Paglia treats is Gnosticism, thus ultimately spiritual. Bloom sees a sort of warfare going on between the earthly and chthonian and the spiritual. He resolves this in Gnosticism, an heretical sect that flourished in the early centuries A.D. and maintained that this world is evil, created by a "demiurge" and that the visions of poets like Shelley are nothing less than emanations from another realm. For Paglia, all this is sexual, and Bloom would not deny a sexual element in all of it, but he goes a bit further in explaining it. Prime example: Paglia's "womb/tomb" of the Chthonian is simply a given. In Bloom, it is the prison of our Fall fom the Gnostic other realm. It fits into a cosmology.
There's a very weird realization that comes over the reader (at least this reader) when we come to the Coleridge section on his poem "Christabel" and the vampire Geraldine and continues creeping over him or her until the final chapter on Emily Dickinson. I know no other way of saying this than that Paglia BECOMES Geraldine to the reader. - I agree with her that Emily Dickinson is an extremely powerful and misunderstood poet and, indeed, have spent several ultimately worthwhile hours poring over her short poems to discover the sexual/spiritual depths. But, sorry Camille, Dickinson is just not another Sade altogether. But in the way Paglia presents her, with Sadean snippets of her poetry, the reader who is unfamiliar with the rest of Dickinson's work cannot fail to come away with this conviction. - For the record: I think part of Dickinson's persona is sadomachistic, but it is only a piece of a complex puzzle.
What we are witnessing and in danger of becoming engulfed in (It happened to me.) is Paglia' own mythopoecism. At some point between Christabel and Dickinson, Paglia becomes the subject of her work. We fall in love with her (I did.); but in the way that Christabel does with Geraldine. She lures us into her own imaginative fixation on the Chthonian womb/tomb of the female, and we identify HER with IT.
In conclusion, READ THIS BOOK, if only for the transformative effect it will have on you. In the last page of the book, Paglia says of Emily Dickinson that "She is frightening!" Yes, Camille,.....YOU ARE!

Outstanding Book!

Mr. O'Donnelll has succeeded in writing a very practical, effective, and efficient book on how to get lean and fit (and stay that way for the rest of your life) with very practical, effective, and efficient strategies and routines based on sound principles and concepts.

His rationale and methodology epitomize the true-to-life maxims of "knowledge is power" and "less is more." So, if you're a person with a busy lifestyle but one who is truly motivated and committed to making a long term change for the better, this book is for you. The "system" delineated within its pages is genuinely "real life" simple and practical. It's one that you can stick with for the long run.

Now, I could summarize the book and highlight all the key points but, out of respect for Mr O'Donnell, I'm not going to do that so as not to steal his thunder.

Lest you think I'm a friend of Mr O"Donnelll and full of hyperbole, I'm not on both counts. I don't know the man or arbitrarily praise something when it's not warranted. I'm just the kind of guy who likes to give credit when it's genuinely due. Anyway, I assure you that purchasing this book will be a worthwhile investment if you follow his plan and at $2.99, it's more than a bargain.

The one and only criticism I had of this book was with its lack of descriptive instructional photos within for the exercises espoused. However, I rescinded this thought when I discovered the appendix section provides a direct link to his website that has videos and other resources which clearly describe and demonstrate the exercises he advocates in his book.

Bottom line, the man and his methods make a whole lot of good sense. As a result, this book is definitely one of the best, most practical guides I've come across in this genre. Oh, this is coming from someone who has his Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology and is already in good condition but remains the perpetual student constantly checking out what others have to offer in order to continuously learn and refine.

Try it you will like it.

Mr. O'Donnell is a genuine fitness trainer who struggles with finding the answer to the question of "How is it we get fit?" those who muster up the courage to go to the gym and slog through the grinding routine of exercise machines, weights in every form, and diets that are complicated, even daunting in their requirements usually end up disappointed and after considerable work find themselves right back where they started.
Mr. O'Donnell encourages simple body weight exercises , done with intensity over 15 minutes. He encourages the reader to play, walk, move, transforming exercise into something that is a simple activity of your every day life.

the book is a good read, and I think if you take his ideas to heart you might actually wake up one day being the fit person you have wanted to be. No magic pill. No quick solution. Just some consistent work and common sense.

Excellent travel book - ticket prices would be nice.

Just spent 10 days in Florence with a few day trips. This book covered everything we wanted to do. The maps are great and very easy to follow. The only negative is the little icon showing if a museum or activity has a fee but doesn't tell you the cost. I assume it's because ticket prices change but it would be nice to know if the entry fee was 3 Euro or 12 Euro. Would also be nice if there was a recommendation regarding booking ahead ie. the secret routes tour in the Ponte Vecchio. There was a three day wait in the middle of the week in October so I can't imagine you could take this tour if you didn't book ahead in the summer.

Great choice

Most guidebooks are densely-packed with a lot of semi-useful information in a difficult to use format, but the eyewitness books are the exception to the rule. This book (and the series) are my favorite travel guides because they make it interesting and engaging to learn about where I am visiting and how best to see the sites: the most historically significant places, and why they are interesting, unique, and important. -As opposed to getting recommendations on so-called "locals only" restaurants, etc... that always end up just catering to tourists with the same guidebook. We used this guidebook for a trip around Florence, Sienna, and Lucca, and it was great reading on the trains between locations, and small enough to carry around. It was a little annoying to try to match restaurant and bar listing to the maps in the book, so we relied on phone apps and recommendations from our hotel, but despite this shortcoming, I still won't go back to using other guidebooks.

Best guidebook!

The clear maps, tidbits of information and suggestions were an important part of our daily planning during our nine day stay in Tuscany. As our own tour guide, we relied on the DK guidebook for suggestions after checking on them with our hotel's concierge. HIGHLY referenced for the day trips to Pisa and Florence, we sometimes read about a location while traveling there on the train. Better than an app downloaded, as we stuck in all the papers picked up during the trip and have that a great reminder of our fabulous trip. Well worth the investment!
