selfish and short-sighted love. The story fits the pattern of classic tragic ...

An engaging novel, it kept me reading and reading and reading despite some rather repetitive (and occasionally underdeveloped) "action scenes." The central character suffers from at first seemingly random personal crises, which subsequently are identified as deliberately harmful acts on the part of an antagonist, and which eventually are discovered to be the results of the protagonists' fatal flaw, selfish and short-sighted love. The story fits the pattern of classic tragic opera and as such is extremely interesting to observe as it develops. As some other reviewers have already commented, there's not a great abundance of science, but then the science of time travel is presently largely limited to theory and speculation, anyway, and besides, it's not really a story about time travel, it's a story about people dealing with power they use but cannot comprehend and with the results thereof. The conclusion of the tale reveals a flawed hero (as all heroes are) who wins our empathy because, were we to be in his situation, we'd probably make the same errors and experience the same heartbreaks ourselves.

In short, it was a good read...I enjoyed it...I'm glad I had the experience.

I absolutely loved this book and I couldn't put it down

I would give this book more than 5 stars if there were more than 5 to give.

Up until this book, I've never been motivated to write a book review for an e-book. However, I absolutely loved this book and I couldn't put it down. I was really disappointed when it was over because it was just a fun, engaging story to read.

This is the first "original" time travel story I've read in a long time. I'm a huge fan of alt worlds/parallel Earths/time travel stories, but it takes a lot to impress me. In this genre, you can honestly say most books follow the same patter "I've seen this plot before and there are really one or two minor twists that make the story different". It's "meh" and fun to read, but not memorable. That's not true for this book.

I found myself invested in the story line and I wanted to see what would happen next. Given that I'll stop reading books if I don't get into them after a few chapters, I find myself surprised that I want a sequel to this book. Usually, I want the story contained in one unit (which this one is!), so it's also rare that I'd complain that there's only one book!

Finally, there is a good balance between being enjoyable for unscientific and scientific audiences. If you are a "how does this work" person, there was detail about the science behind the ideas, while not dragging down the movement of the story. It's not just "space opera". It was a bit too technical for me in spots, but I could see it being the right amount of information for someone else. The author clearly did a lot of research and brought a lot of knowledge of the topic to the table. That is really hard to find in a lot of science fiction. Usually, it tilts one way or another. As a "non-science" oriented person, I could get the information I needed to get the "main idea" and then I could move on w/out feeling like I missed out on major plot points. I think the author served both audiences well.

It was a well-thought out book and I'm really glad I purchased it on a whim. I really can't wait to browse other books by this author.

WOW! How can you give this novel anything less than 5 stars!?

I read a lot...I mean A LOT - all sorts of books but usually sci/fi and time travel tends to be a favorite. This is probably the BEST time travel novel I have read in a very long time. It addresses many concerns, mishaps, and interesting oddities of what time travel can do to someone's life that I have not seen in another book. The wonderful part is that this novel is so much more. It is heavy with science at times but equally develops a deep understanding of human nature, love and what drives us to action and the consequences of those actions. I never expected the story to change into what it became about halfway through - but it was a change that caused me to love it even more. It is one of those books that you can't expect to devour in a day or two, and you should never EVER attempt that. You have got to be able to sit down, read and comprehend and feel what you are reading or you will completely lose the beauty of what the story tries to share. Give it a chance, you will never want to "unhappen" the experience.

A good starting place.

This thin book is a good reference book for the professional or academic geologist. The maps are very useful but the best parts of the book are the reference section and bibliography. I'd give it a five star rating if the references and bibliography were updated to include the last decade of literature. This is a great little book for starting some of your research in the available literature on this topic.

You swam inside the salty sea of your mother’s womb.” Yes, it’s peculiar, as is the assertion that your glass of water is the same water sipped by thirsty dinosaurs. Yet these oddball leaps at marrying the natural world with typical kid thoughts are evocative: “Each time you blow a kiss to that world, you spread pollen that might grow into a new plant.” Kim’s diorama art—entire scenes constructed of real flowers, leaves, and other materials inside wooden boxes and featuring characters suspended from string—is photographed with a shallow depth of field, making images more three-dimensional than actual 3-D. Loved it so much, I bought a 2nd copy for a gift!

I read the reviews for this book and they are spot on. This book is full of interesting information about our natural world, our place in it, and "the surprising connections to nature that we all share." It's is both comforting and informative. Not a book I would recommend for a creationist - there is definitely an evolutionary slant here.
The artwork is superb! Each 2 page spread is a colorful diorama illustrating the text and my son (8) and I had fun figuring out the materials that were used in each piece.
We liked this book so much, we bought a second copy to give his Montessori classroom as a gift.

A story written like poetry!

I was awed and stunned as I read this inspiring book for the first time. After subsequent readings to my own children as well as parents and children in Parents' Place classes, the elegance and sensitivity conveyed in Elin's words and have not been diminished. I am inspired to look beyond my modern feelings of isolationism, to realize that I am and always have been connected physically (not didigitly) to the world around me!

Fantastic, wonderful, invaluable. Period.

At my place of work I have access to *every* RF/wireless circuit and system design book published since 1969, covering everything from books for the beginner all the way up to books for the extremely advanced RF engineer. In other words, I know what is out there when it comes to wireless circuit design books. Complete Wireless Design fills the huge gap between the cookbook/beginner style of book [which has too much missing info; neglects the disastrous RF design "gotch-yas"; and is not adaptable enough for real life design], and the advanced calculus riddled books [which can be too limited in scope; sometimes are totally incomprehensible; don't address the practical side of engineering; and rarely bother to show detailed schematics of the circuits they are so deeply discussing]. Complete Wireless Design's target is distinctly the practical, and not the theoretical [NOTE: Some university-based teachers or certain engineers may be put-off by this strongly practical, no-nonsense "let's get the circuit designed NOW!" approach, but since my own day to day work pressures force me to swiftly design RF circuits, I personally do not have a problem with this]. While no book can, obviously, be totally complete, Complete Wireless Design comes as close to this ideal as I have seen in my almost 30 years of hardcore RF circuit design experience.

The wireless design programs alone are worth the price!

The free wireless circuit design and simulation software that comes with this book have proven extremely valuable to me, unlike many such programs that come with other electronics books. I am able to build a complete amplifier, filter, or oscillator and simulate it with one of the enclosed programs, Puff. This ups my confidence level that the design will function in real life. The other program, AppCad, will actually automatically design FET and bipolar amplifier bias circuits, detectors, microstrip, systems design calcs, etc. I hav'nt tried the EasyPLL phased locked loop design program or the Sonnet microwave simulation software.
Mr. Sayre's book has become one of the more popular ones on rf circuit design for a very good reason: It presents its material in such a way that even a software engineer such as myself can design many of the various bit and pieces of a voice or data radio by just using this one book. As far as I am concerned this is really an achievement, and is valuable to all who are interested in radio design from the low MHz to the high GHz regions. It covers a very large range of information needed on RF engineering, and not only discrete level circuit design, but also systems design, digital and analog modulation, testing and troubleshooting, PCB layout, propagation, EMI, prototyping, etc. It is a great rf book with a large variety of indispensable designs and formulas.

A true one-of-a-kind guide to wireless "design". It guides you through the design process step-by-step. The author presents design procedure for every circuit that make up a complete wireless system. He also provides design hints, tips and tricks. Primarily for Electrical Engineers and circuit and electronics enthusiasts, this book is a must for its primary audience. There's so much valuable information and experience in this book you won't find anywhere else.
The book is not intended for people with no electronics or circuit design background. People without such background will find the book difficult to follow and comprehend. Communication designers and engineers, however, will be extremely delighted with this book.
I'm greatly thankful for the author for his excellent book.

About the Author

DEBBY HERBENICK, PHD, MPH, is a research scientist and lecturer at Indiana University and coordinator of the Kinsey Institute Sexuality Information Service for Students (KISISS). She writes weekly and monthly sex advice columns for newspapers and magazines including Men's Health and Time Out Chicago. She is often called upon as a sex expert by various media from the Today show and Discovery Health to the New York Times. She lives in Bloomington, Indiana.

Want better sex? Pleasure? Orgasms? Read this book!

Although a newer sex book, it is already my favorite sex book to recommend (I work as a sex educator for adults). It's well written, easy to read, has great diagrams, fun quizzes at the start of every chapter and - best of all - the information is GREAT. It's right on, it's accurate and written by someone who totally knows what she is talking about.

A major frustration of mine is that a lot of sex books are written by random people who don't know what they're talking about but act like they do. These are the same people who wind up doing things that their partners find unpleasurable but they do them because they read it in a book or magazine (that was wrong!). FINALLY - a book written by an expert who is fun, smart, and clearly loves sex! Dr. Debby writes about sex the way it should be written about - like it's fun and something we can learn to find pleasurable, exciting and connecting with our partners.

This is the kind of book that you will read over and over again, or refer to when you want more tips on sex toys, vibrators, lubricants, how to talk to your partner about sex, how to talk with your partner *during* sex, how to kick your desire back into higher (or at least decent) gear, and how to have a healthy enough life that it spills over into your sex life.

I recommend this book all the time to women and couples. It's a gold mine of information and encouragement and sure to make your sex life better (even if you don't have a partner). Enjoy!!

Because It Feels Good: A Woman's Guide to Sexcual Pleasure and Satisfaction

I highly recommend this book to any generation, but most particularly to MY generation, the Zooomer (the 50 plus) woman. We were raised with so little information about our own sexuality by our mothers that, for me personally, I did not have my sexual awakening until I was in my 50's. I was married for over 30 years and only a handful of times did I experience pleasure, but an orgasm? never! I thought something was wrong with me, very seriously wrong. I talked to an OBGYN who thankfully was from Europe and very open and she recommended reading material to me. I found that I was not as educated about my own body as I thought. It took an intimate experience after my separation, with someone I had known and not been in touch with for over 40 years, to discover what "love making", not SEX, was all about and how pleasurable and wonderful it could be with someone you are compatible with. Compatibility is important but more than that I found out that yes, body chemistry plays an intrinsic role in the pleasure factor. When you make love you do so not just with your body, then it's just Sex, but with your whole being: body, mind, soul and spirit. My lover is also a very good listener and very tuned into what works for me and I found that I actually, finally also enjoyed pleasuring him, an experience I never really had.
Reading this book has allowed me to become "intimate" with my own body and what makes it work, and HOW and why things give pleasure. I feel like I have finally found that "secret" I have been searching for all my life.... in my Lover and in this book. That emptiness that was in my life has now been filled, and we both have a very vigourous and active sex life and hope to until we are both very, very old.... I highly recommend this book to a generation of women who were never told, that making love was something enjoyable and not just to be endured!

This book was okay, but not really for women who are in tune with their bodies, and looking to spice up their love life. This seems to be more geared to those not comfortable with sex and their own bodies.

Something old, something new, something gross to grab onto you...

China Mieville at last releases more pieces of his talent in this collection of fourteen stories. Some have been previously released, and if you are a die-hard fan like myself you may already have them.

'Reports of Certain Events In London' was in McSweeney's Enchanted Chamber of Astonishing Stories, 'Entry From A Medical Encyclopedia' was published as 'Buscard's Murrain' in The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide To Eccentric And Discredited Diseases, and 'The Tain' is from Cities.

'Looking For Jake' did leave me slightly disappointed in some areas, namely the political undertones of 'Tis The Season' (originally published in The Socialist Review) and 'An End To Hunger', neither of which contained any real fantasy or horror, and the oddly vapid 'On The Way To The Front', an amateurish graphic piece.

There are, however, other stories in this collection that make the price worthwhile just for them.
'Familiar' is a gruesomely enchanting story of one male witch's creation run amok, 'Different Skies' takes a simple window replacement and shows us the kind of horror that can be reflected in oddness, and 'Foundation' will take you beneath the structures of everyday life and into a man's horrific ability to see the dead below them.

'Jack' is a nice addition to Mieville's 'Perdido Street Station', giving us a bit of background on his character Jack Half-A-Prayer, and 'The Tain' is a twisted tale of mirrors and what lies beyond.

If you are a rabid Mieville fan, you simply must have this book. If you are introducing yourself to Mieville, I actually recommend starting with 'Perdido Street Station' to allow yourself to fully savor this talented writer's rich offerings. Reading Mieville is like eating chocolate cheesecake, rich and satisfying and fulfilling. Enjoy!

The collection ranges from one-star to five-star stories

Short fiction usually comes down to either "loved it" or "hated it" because unlike a novel, the short story can't throw much at a reader beyond a single plot and a character or two. The individual stories in this collection will either work for you or they won't. If you're a fan of Mieville's Bas=Lag novels, then "The Tain" and "Jack" will grab you. If you're a fan of his politics, then "'Tis the Season" and "An End to Hunger" will strike you as some of the best satire since Max Barry's "Jennifer Government." If you like his brooding good looks--which aren't my cup of tea--then I guess you'll like the moody "Looking for Jake"--which wasn't my cup of tea either and in my opinion the weakest piece in the book.

If you're a fan, buy this book. You'll surely find something in it for you. If you are looking for an introduction to Mieville's work, I'd recommend jumping right into "Perdido Street Station," or buying LFJ, reading nothing other than "The Tain," then reading "Perdido" and the rest of Mieville's fine novels.

Considering Conventional Gear? Read This First!

This book was recommended to me by a flight instructor who specializes in conventional (taildragger) instruction. I read it in a few nights and understand why the instructor felt it to be foundational.

Plourde (now deceased) knew what he was talking about and makes the basics very accessible and more than slightly entertaining. His proofreader should have been fired, but if you're reading this for grammar and punctuation, you're missing the point.

Through the use of diagrams, stick models, great stories and confessions, Plourde makes honest comparisons between taildraggers and the now-more-common nose-gear-equipped aircraft, and cites the advantages (and disadvantages) of each. He even goes into the some of the quirks of some of the taildraggers with which he had experience, to make it clear not every taildragger handles like every other.

Every pilot and instructor will gain something from the book, particularly about the proper way to deal with crosswinds - even in tricycle gear aircraft. And all will gain respect for skilled taildragger pilots.
