Architecture has the capacity to be inspiring, engaging and life-enhancing. But why is it that architectural schemes which look good on the drawing board or the computer screen can be so disappointing ‘in the flesh’?

The answer, argues Juhani Pallasmaa, lies in the dominance of the visual realm in today’s technological and consumer culture, which has pervaded architectural practice and education. Whilst our experience of the world is formulated by a combination of five senses, much architecture is produced under consideration of only one – sight. The suppression of the other sensory realms has led to an impoverishment of our environment, causing a feeling of detachment and alienation.

First published in 1996, The Eyes of the Skin has become a classic of architectural theory and is required reading on courses in schools of architecture around the world. It consists of two extended essays. The first surveys the historical development of the ocularcentric paradigm in western culture since the Greeks, and its impact on the experience of the world and the nature of architecture. what has been lost in architecture and why it should be back

During my 15 years of architectural education and some years of practice (both as architect and as 'explainer' of architecture) I have not yet encountered a book on architecture which has changed my view on architecture so dramatically.

Juhani Pallasmaa's book makes an excelent argument for retrieving in architecture that which seems to have been lost for a long time: the lived intelligence of the bodilly senses. In his book Pallasmaa gives an overview of the development of the occularcentrism which is dominating architecture (and pretty much every cultural aspect) in the Western world for centuries and goes on to show how this leads to an impoverment of the architectural experience (and with that the impoverment of our daily lifes).

The mix of theory, practice and convincing examples (ranging from architecture, art, cinema to literature and poetry together with the size (80 pages) makes the book easily readable, even for the less theoretical inclined reader. My advice: read it!

For those of you who are as impressed with this book as I am: there's another book by Pallasmaa with the title 'Encounters'(published by Rakennustieto Oy Rati, June 2005). This book features a collection of essay's which were written by the author over the last 20 years. This book is also about the phenomenology of architecture but, due to its size (app. 350 pages), gives a broader overview of the thinking and writing of Juhani Pallasmaa. It seems it is not available at Amazon but I hope they will put is on there list soon!

Updated Reprint of an Old Classic

Now back in print and updated into a second edition, this little book is a masterpiece on the differences between what we see in a set of architectural plans compared with what we sense when we walk into a building.

When we actually walk into a building, we are sensing the building with all of our senses. The smell of the still drying paint, the echo's from unexpected sources and more now have an impact that wasn't there in the plans.

This book consists of two essays:

The first surveys the historical development of the eye-centric orientation of our Western culture that began with the Greeks.

The second begins to lay out a way towards a multi-sensory approach to architecture that forms a sense of belonging and integration.

Lessons for students in architecture

As a student in architecture I would recommend this book to any person involved in any way of design. Not only buildings, because architecture also includes every aspect of the designing of space. This can therefore include industrial design, automotive design, etc. The book dicusses the interaction between people and spaces(buildings) using the human senses as medium - the way we see, feel, hear and experience a space. It is a fresh and captivating book and it is a real pitty that it is out of print.

About the Author
Roland H. Bainton (1894–1984) was born in England and came to the United States in 1902. A recipient of many degrees, Dr. Bainton was a specialist in Reformation history. For many years he was Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale University. His other books include The Reformation of the Sixteenth Century, The Travail of Religious Liberty, The Age of Reformation, and Christian Attitudes Toward War and Peace.

Still the best biography of Martin Luther for us layfolk. Wonderful.

This is a classic that allows you to understand Luther as you never could before. The book is clear, concise and at times funny. But always, you come off understanding the Gospel as new and fresh through Luther's (and Biblical) eyes. At the same time, you see the people he had to contend with (both Catholic and Protestant), and how they twisted Scripture, and you come to realize they were not that different from us in the early 16th century. The edition I bought was the $15 paperback, and the printing quality was poor, which is the only reason this did not get 5 stars. Also, the many 15th century illustrations (from Luther's books and pamphlets and from those of his opponents) were so small it was hard to see the points Bainton was making as he discussed each. I gave up and bought the Kimble edition. What a refreshing change (for only $6). The font was much easier to read, and the figures were clear as they were and could be "opened" to zoom in on all the details. Now if only my old iPad2 wasn't so heavy. :)

Very, very well written biography of Luther and the beginning of the Reformation. Recounts the revolution in technology, society and the effect of intellectual thought and the courage of Luther as well as others who paved the way for awakening of human thought inside and outside of Christianity.

This is a most comprehensive and fascinating study on the life of Luther as well as the history of the church around him. However I will have to reread it & have a dictionary at hand to use often. This time thru I am just getting the main idea, but I'm certain much has been lost in the forest of words I do not know! Definitely happy with it & it's a "must have" in your library.

A trek for Trinie is a moving, lyrical, and infinitly sad story of a little Jewish girl, hidden by good people during the years of war in the Netherlands. De Lange remembers her story in order to help her rescuer with her claim from the Dutch government to receive a pension as a resistance fighter. De Lange arranges for recognition by Yad VaShem for Trienie Roelof, and brings her to Israel. the story of the two women, now middle aged and surrounded by children and grandchildren, the book recalls the events leading up to her stay with the Roelof family, and the fate of her own grandparents, uncle and aunts. De Lange's parents and sister return from their ordeal, and try to take up the thread of their lives again.
The story is told as a retrospect, at times through the voice of Wiesje de child, and at others as Wiesje the woman. The book is a read no one should miss!
