Great for Beginning Stargazers and Celestial Navigators

This large format book seems to be unlike any other when it comes to 3D and related representations of relevance to both stargazing and celestial navigation. It provides an amazing context for understanding other flat/2D charts and tabular reference material.

Also related... I was undecided as to whether to buy the RASC Observers Handbook 2014 or the Astronomical Calendar 2014, but when I noticed that Guy Ottewell authored the Astronomical Calendar my decision was easy...

Note the large size -- 14.8 x 10.8 inches -- not something that tucks away with other books easily... but the oversize format really does support the scope and detail of the graphics.

I have bought the yearly Astronomical Calendar from Guy Ottewell for years. This book is the same quality as the Calendars. His illustrations are wonderful; His writing is extremely educational. I cannot say enough good things about his work.

Mom, You're Fired!

The book, Mom, You're Fired!, by Nancy K. Robinson, is an exciting book about the relationship between Tina and her mother. A lot of children go through embarrassing mothers and this book tells about how Tina deals with it.
Weather it's at home, at the grocery store, at a parent-teacher conference, or even when a friend is over, Tina's mother has ways of embarrassing her. She dresses weird, she sings in public, and does all other kinds of typical embarrassing-mother-things. I think that Tina can be selfish at times, and cares too much about what other people think. Her mother is the opposite. She'll do anything for Tina and couldn't care less about what people think of her. I think her mother is a very caring mother but at the same time does her own thing. Tina's best friend Melissa, is rude, selfish, and stuck up. I didn't like her at all. Tina has some problems with her friends, and her mother is always there for her. What I liked best about the book was how Tina dealt with they way her friends treated her. I didn't like how Tina treated her mother though. It was really rude. This book teaches a lot about treating your parents with respect. The ending was typical but I liked it.
The does a good job with keeping the reader interested and not giving too many details. The book was fairly easy to understand and didn't have big words at all. Because of the plot, this book is great for ages 10-16. I would recommend this book because so many kids can relate to it.

Mom, You're Fired

ISBN 0590423355 - Cute, and hardly a brain bender, Mom, You're Fired is a good title for the 9-12 age group (more 9 than 12). Every one of us will recognize ourselves in Tina and some of us will recognize ourselves in her mom.

Tina's mom is so embarrassing. She doesn't dress as nicely as Melissa's mother. And she sings - in public! Tina's lunches even embarrass her. So when she meets a new girl, she tells her that her mother is her babysitter and Tina begins a trail of lies she has to struggle to maintain. How it unravels is fairly predictable, but it's worthwhile.

Nice message without being too soap-box-ish. Robinson does an excellent job of telling a story with a moral without beating the reader about the head with it. This is the first book I've read by her, and I look forward to finding more.

Entertaining and insightful

This was a big hit with me when I was a boy, showing that it can reach across gender lines to appeal to boys and girls who can empathize with the idea of being embarrassed by one's parents.

The action follows the misadventures of Tina Steele, who is so ashamed of her sometimes-wacky mom that she tells her visiting friend that the woman in her home is actually her babysitter. This and a handful of embarrassments lead to a climax that teach Tina that lying to her friends is not a solution, and that her mother has feelings, too.

The writing is straightforward, and the encounters have a certain amount of humor in them, but are not played up for big laughs. This is mostly a novel that will help children to think of their parents in a new way, without coming off as preachy.

Over the past decade, he has consulted with many attorneys, agencies, and police departments in the United States, South America, and Europe on a wide range of digital investigations, including fraud, violent crimes, identity theft, and on-line criminal activity. Eoghan has helped organizations investigate and manage security breaches, including network intrusions with international scope. He has delivered expert testimony in civil and criminal cases, and has submitted expert reports and prepared trial exhibits for computer forensic and cyber-crime cases.

In addition to his casework and writing the foundational book Digital Evidence and Computer Crime, Eoghan has worked as R&D Team Lead in the Defense Cyber Crime Institute (DCCI) at the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3) helping enhance their operational capabilities and develop new techniques and tools. Computer Crime Investigation...Cookbook!

What is your real interest?
If you have a strong background on computer networks, and want to know about 'true' computers forensic, then you should consider books like 'Know your Enemy' or 'Intrusion Signatures and Analysis'. Else, if you are not a computer networks expert or not even a computer professional, and want to have some knowledge about computers forensic, then this can be your book: very comprehensive, not too depth, rich of examples, and, as a bonus, covering several emerging security issues like Wireless Network Analysis and Embedded Systems Analysis.
Note, however that:
- It is not a traditional book, but rather a set of 'essays'.
- The contained material is quite biased, since several explanations seem to be more oriented toward promoting tools than to discuss the areas they are intended for.

You'll find something to like in this collection of essays

I am a senior engineer for network security operations. I bought "Handbook of Computer Crime Investigation" (HoCCI) to expand my knowledge of incident response and digital forensics. While "Incident Response" by Mandia, Prosise, and Pepe remains my top pick, HoCCI contains enough original material to qualify as recommended reading.

HoCCI is a collection of 14 distinct chapters written by 17 authors. The book's main audience appears to be law enforcement personnel, and Academic Press markets the book as a title in its "Forensic Science" catalog. The introduction states the book is written for "forensic examiners" who testify in court, although anyone performing digital forensics will find useful sections.

Some of HoCCI's strengths include numerous case studies. Ch. 2 offers examples of "ineffective" and "effective" disclosure and production of digital records in legal proceedings. Chs. 12, 13, and 14 are dedicated to factual legal and incident response scenarios. Reading these anecdotes, I perceived most of the 17 authors to be extremely familiar with their field.

Beyond helpful case studies, HoCCI provides several strong technical chapters. Bob Sheldon's Windows section (ch. 7) is excellent, and Ronald van der Knijff's embedded systems essay (ch. 11) explains the cutting edge of digital forensics. His discussions of directly reading FLASH and EEPROM memory, and using power analysis to break passwords, are impressive. I enjoyed Steve Romig's explanation of using Cisco NetFlow logs in ch. 4, and found the descriptions of wireless systems in ch. 10 to be useful.

HoCCI is not without faults. Several chapters seem like product advertisements; EnCase is the focus of ch. 3, while NFR's IDS appears in ch. 5. The network analysis section (ch. 9) repeats the much-quoted myth that TCP sequence numbers count packets; they actually count bytes of application data.

Overall, HoCCI is a useful supplement to Foundstone's "Incident Response." HoCCI may spend too many pages describing how to search hard drives for remnants of illicit images, illegal software, or harassing emails. Fortunately, its technical content distinguishes it from "Computer Forensics" by Kruse and Heiser and "Incident Response: A Strategic Guide" by Schultz and Shumway.

Hands-on, immediately applicable to our real-world cases

Eoghan Casey's text is immediately useful. It's not theory, it's practical. It's not biased to one operating system, but covers several technologies. Finally, Eoghan and the book's contributors do not gloss over today's most offensive topics, they address them with vigor and solutions.

I would share one concern: the chapter-long product/vendor discussion. Some reviewers label it marketing; other reviewers don't mention it at all. I'll just forewarn you that you will learn much more about EnCase or NFR than about their competitors.

As a security consultant for Hewlett-Packard, it seems my bookshelf fills up entirely too easily, especially as of the last few years. Therefore, I've gotten fairly selective with new book purchases (until I can get a new bookshelf). However, Casey's text is DEFINITELY worth getting - worth knocking another book off to make room. :)

I hope you enjoy this comprehensive text at least half as much as I do.

The book with the heart of a teacher!

I recently purchased this book which I am impressed with, & Evidence & Procedures for Boundary Location 5th Edition which I could hardly understand what I was reading most of the time (Written as a lawyer would speak). I have not finished this book, but understand what I am reading. The same three authors have had input on both books, but Brown's Boundary Control has been worded in a way that a teacher would say things in order for all of his students to understand. I am impressed with the ability of the authors to explain this vast subject of boundary location & law, & would recommend this book to anyone.

Alma Amazon Reviewer- Amazing Books. These books are amazing. I couldn't quit reading and then was sorry when I was done. Everything progressed quickly and smoothly without being dragged out even though it seemed a little too impossible at times. That I was able to purchase all the books in a bundle was also a bonus. I loved them and absolutely follow this author and look for his other books.

I wanted to race through this book as I have been eagerly awaiting it since his last exciting instalment on the Rosslerite's latest world-saving activities.However, I forced myself to wait and savor each page as the story "worked each problem" to peel and reveal the solutions like the layers of an onion. This book was pre-ordered and did not disappoint. If I could, I would use that Rossler "time machine" to move Mr. Ryan back in time to write the next instalment so that I would not have to wait so long for our next book! Alas, I must close this novel and dream about what the future holds for our next president and his family. Whatever awaits them, I know this much .. . The Rossler family and their many friends will be able to handle it. I feel the future is in very safe hands.

I have sat and read no, consumed this last book. I know I've had a feast, not just dinner. I'm going to have to read it again as I'm sure I have not yet understood exactly all they did to defeat the monster of a man and his organization.

I honestly believed JC had walked them into a corner he would never be able to extract them from. When we last read about what was happening to the people of the Rossler Foundation, they were living in a cave and completely out of contact with the rest of the world. They were unable to reach out to anyone or anything, fearful for their lives and just doing what they could to survive.

All seemed lost and hopeless. How could they extract themselves and the rest of the world from the dreadful and dire situation the madman had plunged the entire planet into? It looked impossible.

There are not many writers I know who would be prepared goto these extremes. JC actually allowed the bad guys to win. By the end of the last book, 'The Sky Walkers' they were in control and there was little or nothing the Rosslers could do to stop them. It was sickening and frightening and very real - it is what could happen if we are kept in the dark about whatis going on in the world today and do we know? I'm not sure we do.

By the time I'd finished the last book I felt sure all was lost, there seemed to be no way out. JC had covered all options and there were none left, well not as far as I could see.

Somehow JC has pulled them out of total defeat and set them back stronger than ever.

What I love about the Rossler Foundation is they don't fight the bad guys with guns, grenades and kevlar jackets, there's no brawn, it's all brain, intelligence and nanotechnology. We learn what is possible when talented people come together and unite in their intent to take back the planet and free the people from the most awful and dire situations the monster has put them all in.

How they do it, is for you to read and enjoy as I have.There is only one shortcoming in the book that I can see - is this the last we will read of these remarkable and likeable people? Will we not know of any further adventures they may have; will they not discover yet another unknown civilization from thousands of years ago?

OldArcher Amazon Reviewer - Want to pass Indiana Jones? Try the Rossler Foundation, and it's intrepid men and women... If Amazon would allow, I'd give Mr. Ryan Six Stars for each of his works. Character development, plot, dialog- all plausibly integrated into great stories that capture the imagination. Not since Heinlein have I found as captivating a writer. I will be, like many others, eagerly awaiting his next works, for they are, indeed, addictive. When you start one of his novels, sleep is held in abeyance, and you long for the kind of purpose and adventure found by the people in his books... Read them, and savor them, as you would a tumbler of world class whiskey, a fine wine, or as in my case, a steaming hot cup of gourmet coffee... To those who can suspend one's"reality," and long for more adventure, "Cheers!"

Thank goodness they're back

Could not put it down!

I absolutely love these Rossler Foundation books. This latest one did not disappoint! I read this book in 1 1/2 days. If I had not had to sleep, I would have read all night. I was amazed at how the Rosslerites managed to save not only themselves, but the world as well. This is the most resourceful group of people. I want to live in the Rabbit Hole with them. Please tell me that there will be many more books to read. I cannot wait for the next one.
