Imagine a new system of finding people with whom you could be compatible, or who at least understand the nature of your interpersonal dynamic. Based on information channeled from her spirit guide Grey Eagle, spiritual medium Altea (The Eagle and the Rose) has written such a system based on "Soul Signs" or energy groups: Fire, Earth, Air, Water and Sulphur. Although the first four sound similar to the cardinal associations of astrology, Altea firmly asserts that astrological and soul sign typing are different. For example, her mother is an Aquarian, but fire is her soul type. Fire souls are driven by passion; earth by a need to plan and strategize; air by a passive and calming energy flow; and water by a need to evaluate and compromise. The fifth group, sulphur, is a total departure from astrological ideas, as sulphur souls are driven by evil. Within each of the five energy groups there are subsets based on type of energy flow (introvert, central and extrovert), which is not the same as a personality type whom we might consider as introverted or extroverted. These subsets have evocative labels such as Retrospective, Visionary, Peacemaker, Newborn, Bright Star, Warrior Soul, etc. All members of the sulphur sign are considered Dark Souls. Since soul signs, unlike astrological signs, lack an obvious date marker, Altea gives numerous explanations and variations to help readers determine their soul sign and subset throughout. People are always looking for new ways to categorize themselves and others, whether it be by Jungian archetypes or astrology. The author of Soul Signs has created her own via the guidance of her spirit Grey Eagle and her own 20-odd years of observation of the human psyche. Although you may not take her word as gospel, she has developed an interesting system of "typing" people. There are 13 spiritual "types" in her system.
I myself am having a difficult time deciding which of the 13 "soul types" I am, so the book is perhaps not as helpful to me as it could have been. Also controversial is the idea that there is a very small minority of souls who are truly evil, not just disturbed. The author opines that there are people who born "dark souls" who are here just to revel in the hurt they cause others and for which there is no redemption.
If you can accurately choose your own type from the descriptions, then you'll be able to choose your most compatible soul mates from several charts included with the book. Good luck.

I Am The Seeker!

This book is very interesting, I was always curious in what I read on the back of the book, wondering how accurate the book actually could be. And I must say, even though at first I didn't know what I could be since she leaves the discovery to your own knowledge, I found this book to be endlessly fascinating. I did though skim through most of her words about other things, such as her own sign and how it affected her and the others around her, because that was not why I bought the book I just wanted to know who I was.

Yet if you skim through most of her talking and get to the main point of the book of finding out about all the personalities of the soul signs, it gets to be a great reading. It took me awhile to figure myself out, but if you just read the signs more carefully, and just think about yourself a little more, you'll realize one of the signs just hitting you.

I don't know if it was true for everyone else, but I found my zodical element, which is water, also being in my soul sign. I am a Seeker soul- wise, but I am also in the zodiac a Cancer. I wonder if others found themselves finding their soul sign in the same element as their zodiac sign like I did. I found that interesting. Yet I know I am the Seeker, and even the first time I read through the book I knew I found myself being linked to water still just like in my zodiac sign.

I think this is a cool form of thought, to think our soul has an actual sign alone is interesting. I say I believe it, since the Seeker soul sounds so much like myself. I would say this is a good addition to the library of astrology lovers such as I. If you love astrology, I recommend this as well.

A completely professional approach

The thing about this book is that it is written from a completely professional point of view. It deals with lighting as it is really practiced on professional movie sets - not like most books on cinematography which seem to be written by people who haven't actually done it all that much in the real world. I've bought about every book there is on movie lighting and most of them are a waste of money.
This book covers everything from a basic introduction to color, exposure and electricity up to the more complex technical issues you have to deal with as a gaffer or cinematographer: very thorough and comprehensive. The Set Technicians book is good if all you are trying to be is an electrician, but this is the one you want if you really want to move up as a gaffer, lighting director or Director of Photography. Except for one chapter (film exposure), everything in the book applies equally well to video, digital video or High Def. There is also a very good chapter on video which covers what you REALLY have to know to work in video lighting.
If you work (or want to work) in the motion picture industry, knowing lighting is the key to advancement and success. This is the book to get if you really want to learn motion picture and video lighting.

A good lighting manual for a beginning cameraperson.

Blaine Brown's book provides a decent explanation of set lighting, it's instruments and protocol. The text, though, seems to speak more to the cameraperson or AC who is curious about lighting. There is a lack of attention given to the juicers and hammers who are actually creating and shaping the light. There is a considerable amount of text granted to electrics and the distribution of power, but much more thorough and much more practically explained definitions are readily available in Harry Box's "Set Lighting Technician's Handbook."

A thick, but informative read.

My ONE complaint with this book is that there's a bit too much technical jargon for my liking, but then again knowing that is part of the film business so I'd better get used to it. The book tells you about all the kinds of studio lights out there and what situations they are used in. This reads more like a text book to me than a casual read, but I don't mind because it's regarding a subject that I find fascinating and is in my opinion one of the most exciting industries in the world!

Very good word problem practice that uses Singapore Math methods

We test our home schooled kids each year, and one area of weakness was math word problems. To address this we purchased a Singapore Math primer book and this Word Problem book. At first, they struggled with the problems, but after several weeks, their skills have improved significantly. We're also seeing an improvement in the way they analyze other problems. The extra emphasis on works problems has been beneficial, and this workbook deserves much of the credit. The workbook emphasizes Singapore Math, but we use MathUSee at home. The touch of Singapore Math has been a good supplement.

Only a few problems are well-phrased to challenge my daughter. The solutions to the problems make more than half of the book. There are a few blank pages for notes. Really blank pages for notes!! Not to mention that the majority of the problem are as easy as subtracting and adding two numbers. This is for sure not a 4th grade book.

Love the Singapore math workbooks! Great teaching tool!

These workbooks are supreme if your student or child is working in the Singapore Math. My granddaughter had a lot of trouble with math and understanding/retaining what she learned. Everyone said this would be too hard. I found that she worked so much more independently and came up grade levels all by herself. I came back for one more because she asked for it. This was fabulous! She has Aspergers Syndrome and we tried everything for years to no avail. Two years ago I got her in to Singapore Math and she began to excel immediately. They give pages of examples for the child to look at and try before attempting a page on their own. The child can also go back and look at previous examples to refresh their skill and then accomplish the problem suceessfully. So glad I got these! reasonably priced as well in my opinion!

Wonderful textbook!

This text book is incredibly thorough, yet concise. Understandable explanations and real-world examples make understanding and applying the concepts easy. The author's sense of humor makes the text that much more enjoyable. The sequencing of chapters and references within the chapters to past or future explanations is helpful. There are practice quizzes at the end of each chapter that are thought provoking and a good test of your understanding of the material. I highly recommend this book.

This was the textbook for my junior class. The author can be described as having a sense of humor which I have found rare in textbooks. The vocabulary is clear and concise and the chapters have a good progression for a new student in the field of SLP.

Greg Louganis is a four-time Olympic gold-medal diving champion. He lives in Malibu, California, where he raises and trains Harlequin Great Danes.

Eric Marcus is the author of several books, including Making History: The Struggle for Gay and Lesbian Equal Rights, 1945 to 1990; Is it a Choice? and Why Suicide? He lives in New York City.

"Diving Is Easy, Life Is a Huge Hurdle"

This is a very straight forward story of multi Olympic gold-medal winning athlete, Greg Louganis. His growing up had many obstacles such as having a stutter, dyslexia (which was not diagnosed until he was in college), and constantly trying to prove he was not retarded. Being darker skinned in an all white school subjected him to bullying and teasing. His report cards weren't good, but his gift of gymnastics and dancing resulted in rewarding achievements. Greg, being of Polynesian descent, was not adopted until he was nine months old. His father by birth was Samoan, his mother northern European; both parents unmarried teens when he was placed into an adoption program. His adoptive mother is great, but his father of Greek descent was stern and explosive at times. His adopted sister, Despina, and he always tried to avoid upsetting their father. Reaching maturity, he was still plagued with issues that tended to keep him from doing much socializing. He tried to keep his homosexuality private as well as having been tested HIV positive. Some of his homosexual relations were devastating, sometimes threatening his successful diving career and the benefits of his success. This is a well written autobiography of Greg Louganis with help from co-author Eric Marcus. It is easy to read and it's honesty very moving. I liked this story and I found it hard to put down. Highly recommend.

A Compelling Story

A very interesting and intensely personal story of a great Olympian and the trials of his life in and out of public scrutiny. The book is honest, open and direct. Thank you.

I have always admired Mr. Louganis. His story is sad, happy, and beautifully presented. After reading this, I can only hope he continues towards happiness.

About the Author
IAN C. ESSLEMONT grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He has studied archaeology and creative writing, has traveled extensively in Southeast Asia, and lived in Thailand and Japan for several years. He now lives in Alaska with his wife and children and is currently working on another novel set in the world of Malaz, a world he co-created with Steven Erikson.

Esslemont just keeps improving as he expands the world of ...

Esslemont just keeps improving as he expands the world of Wu. He is not on the same level as Erickson, but he has come a long way since Night of Knives. His characters have more depth and growth, and his plot points are decidedly less telegraphed. This book was a definite pleasure to read. Plot-wise, it was not quite as tightly written as Orb, Sceptre, Throne. However, the themes and scenes were much more succinct and visual.

Esslemont is living up to Erikson's standard

Another strong outing from Esslemont. There have been a lot of Erikson's fans that bash on Ian's work but there is little justification for callous regard when it comes to Assail. An enjoyable read that broadens the reader's understanding of the world events occurring outside the main timeline of the MBOTF.

Quite enjoyable, well written, and a lot of fun.

I wish it came in an audiobook format.

I would definitely recommend it if you like the series!!!
