London. Present day. Girls are disappearing. And strange things are roaming the streets.
When sixteen-year-old Lily is attacked by a two-headed dog, she's saved by hot, tattooed, and not-quite-human Regan. As Guardian of the Gates, it's his job to protect both halves of the City--new and old--from restless creatures that threaten its very existence. But an influx of these mythological beasts has Regan worried that something terrible--and immense--is about to happen.
The missing girls may have something to do with the monsters wandering around London, but what do they have in common? Can Lily and Regan find the girls and discover the truth in time to save London from being torn apart?

From School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—Girls from Middle Temple are disappearing, and Lily might be next. She is attacked by a bandogge—a two-headed dog—but is saved from death by a stranger, Regan, through their shared rare blood type, H. The incident leaves Lily's understanding of the world chaotically ripped open. She learns that Regan is the Guardian of the Gates and that there is an old and new city of London. Dark beings known as the Chaos are "upsetting the balance" between old and new, and supernatural monsters are flooding London, attacking a small number of girls, and causing harm. To restore the balance, Lily helps Regan as layers of his world continue to unfold. Along the way, Lily discovers connections between her and Regan's world while developing a romantic relationship with him. Inglis blends light romance and urban fantasy with a touch of science-fiction. This action-packed work lacks thorough development of the fantasy world and an emotional connection to Lily. The plot is somewhat clunky and murky, and the characters don't feel fully formed. Still, the action and twists are enough to keep some readers engaged. The book ends wide open to the possibility of a sequel, which could potentially level out the story in future installments. VERDICT An additional purchase for those needing fast-moving plots and blended genres.—Adrienne L. Strock, Teen Library Manager, Nashville Public Library

The Greek Sophists (Penguin Classics)From Dillon, John M. (TRN)/ Gergel, Tania (EDT)/ Dillon, John M. (EDT)

By mid-5th century BC, Athens was governed by democratic rule and power turned upon the ability of the citizen to command the attention of the people, and to sway the crowds of the assembly. It was the Sophists who understood the art of rhetoric and the importance of transforming effective reasoning into persuasive public speaking. Their enquiries - into the status of women, slavery, the distinction between Greeks and barbarians, the existence of the gods, the origins of religion, and whether virtue can be taught - laid the groundwork for the insights of the next generation of thinkers such as Plato and Aristotle.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Review of the Penguin Classics "The Greek Sophists"
By Ryan Mease
To start off, it's important to note that I alight this work closely with a comparable Penguin Classics work: "The Presocratic Philosophers." Like that work (by another author), this work gathers fragmentary testimony from a variety of ancient sources to piece together the lives and doctrines of various sophistic figures.

From my perspective, this work suceeds as well as the Presocratic work: it is readable, thorough in its coverage of characters, and features many extant Sophist fragments in full (Gorgia's Economium of Helen was a personal favorite). Although this work is by two editors, the work is seamless and unified.

This book is lacking one Sophist: Isocrates. Despite attempts to justify this action, I feel that editors have created an incomplete volume by excluding this thinker.

Speech is a powerful lord
By Luc REYNAERT
Rhetoric, morality, fees
As J. Dillon explains in his excellent introduction, sophist teaching was `all about rhetoric, the all-conquering power of persuasion speech'.
Why was (and is) rhetoric so important? Because Athens became a democracy and the ambitious and the prominent citizens had to sway the crowds in the assembly (now on TV).
Rhetoric has nothing to do with morality (`it is not the teachers who are bad, but rather those who use it incorrectly'). Of course, sophists expressed their own views on mankind, religion, social issues or politics. Some were political ambassadors of their home country. Others played crucial roles in political upheavals and deadly conflicts.
Another constant in their lives were the truly enormous fees they asked for their teachings.

Individual assessments
Protagoras of Abdera was a relativist: `Man is the measure of all things.' or, `The soul is nothing apart from the senses.' and, `Concerning the gods, I am not in a position to know that they exist or not.'

Gorgias of Leontini was a pure rhetorician, searching verbal power through metaphors, figurative language, repetitions and apostrophes. His `Encomium of Helen' and `Defense of Palamedes' are superb texts.

Prodicus of Ceos was a proto-Wittgenstein, emphasizing the correct use of language and words. He could be the inventor of the theory `that men deified all things that are of benefit for our life.'

Hippias of Elis was a proto-Freud, stressing the antinomy between nature (individualism) and convention (culture, laws).

Antiphon was another proto-Freud: `the advantages prescribed by laws are shackles upon nature.' He was also a staunch anti-democrat who masterminded the oligarchy of the 'Four Hundred'.

Thrasymachus of Chalcedon was a proto-Nietzsche, for whom `might is right': `the just is nothing else than the advantage of the stronger.'

Critias of Athens, Plato's cousin, was a real (not a proto-) mass-murderer. As the leader of the puppet regime of `The Thirty Tyrants' set up by Sparta, `he was outstanding in savagery and bloodthirstiness.' He supported Sparta's plan `to give Attica the appearance of a mere pasture for sheep by emptying her of her human herd.'

Euthydemus and Dionysius of Chios were proto-Wittgensteins, stressing the ambiguities of language.

Alcidamus of Elaea defended orality and improvisation. He was a true democrat: `God left all men free; Nature has made no man a slave.'

The Anonymous Jamblichi defend convention against nature: `convention holds men and cities together.'

General picture, actuality
Part of the sophists' teaching is still very topical: `War, the worst evil to men, leads people to ruin and slavery.' And, `the common use of money is a result of trust; without mutual trust even a great deal of money would not be sufficient.'
This book throws also a shrill light on the by some so much admired Spartan society. In fact, its citizens lived continuously in fear of their helots.

This book gives an exceptionally clear picture of an important part of Greek history. It provides a deeper understanding of Plato's Dialogues and the works of the major playwrights.
It is a must read for all lovers of Greek history and classical texts.

Worth owning if you're about to create a pitiful revolution
By N. Coppedge
This is really a two star book with sterling qualities.

You expect different. But the arguments aren't frankly as brilliant as the sophists must have been.

Why not try to create your own arguments instead?

This book focuses on historical realism, and does 'feel like a book' sort of.

What it's missing is brilliance. If that's what you really need, there are better options. Like the Oxford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (or many others). Some businessmen are worse, for no good reason.

good but not great
By Rick Chatham
This book tries to cram too much into each chapter, often breezing over incredibly deep topics in a way that is only confusing.

For instance, one chapter on data analysis mentions linear regression but doesn't speak at all to what it is. If I had not taking a Quant course recently I would have been completely lost.

This seems to happen the most frequently at the ends of chapters. It seems as if they cover all the main points and then Kotler et. al try to cram all their other little notes and tidbits into overly dense paragraphs just before concluding.

Also if you're a student who has to take the accompanying tests created by Prentiss Hall, expect the questions to come literally word for word from the test, rather than asking concept questions. I felt like I was back in gradeschool.

On the plus side, the book constantly gives breakout examples of the topic being discussed as applied in real life to actual businesses. Hands on the Land: A History of the Vermont Landscape, by Jan Albers

In this book Jan Albers examines the history -- natural, environmental, social, and ultimately human -- of one of America's most cherished landscapes: Vermont. Albers shows how Vermont has come to stand for the ideal of unspoiled rural community, examining both the basis of the state's pastoral image and the equally real toll taken by the pressure of human hands on the land. She begins with the relatively light touch of Vermont's Native Americans, then shows how European settlers -- armed with a conviction that their claim to the land was "a God-given right" -- shaped the landscape both to meet economic needs and to satisfy philosophical beliefs. The often turbulent result: a conflict between practical requirements and romantic ideals that has persisted to this day. Making lively use of contemporary accounts, advertisements, maps, landscape paintings, and vintage photographs, Albers delves into the stories and personalities behind the development of a succession of Vermont landscapes. She observes the growth of communities from tiny settlements to picturesque villages to bustling cities; traces the development of agriculture, forestry, mining, industry, and the influence of burgeoning technology; and proceeds to the growth of environmental consciousness, aided by both private initiative and governmental regulation. She reveals how as community strengthens, so does responsible stewardship of the land. Albers shows that like any landscape, the Vermont landscape reflects the human decisions that have been made about it -- and that the more a community understands about how such decisions have been made, the better will be its future decisions.

Review

The fascination of Hands on the Land lies in its beautifully orchestrated build-up to the Vermont of today.

(Tom Hotaling, Architecture Boston)

Jan Alber's provocative book walks the reader through the fascinating geography and history of Vermont. Throughout, she artfully captures the events contributing to the shaping of the land, thus giving a history of the people and communities who have creatively lived and worked against the backdrop of one of the most remarkable and gently preserved landscapes in the world.

(Thomas P. Salmon, Governor of Vermont, 1973-1977, and President of the University of Vermont, 1991-1997)

Jan Albers has captured the essence of Vermont, showing us how inextricably linked are its land, its people, and its way of life. In chronicling the changes time has brought to Vermont's land and economy, Albers prompts us to look anew at how inevitably the decisions of today will determine the Vermont of tomorrow.

(Jean Hocker, President, The Land Trust Alliance)

Jan Albers's wry, sympathetic portraits of immigrants, farmers, entrepeneurs, scientists, politicians, and eccentrics combine with a remarkable sequence of illustrations to make Hands on the Land feel like a family album for Vermont. This is a book of illuminations and delights.

(John Elder, Middlebury College)

The unique character and timeless appeal of Vermont are rooted largely in the look of the land itself. In Hands on the Land, Jan Albers offers a lively and insightful study of the geological factors, the social and economic trends, and -- perhaps most compelling -- the human dreams and schemes that have shaped the landscape and in the process made Vermont one of America's truly special places.

(Richard Moe, President, National Trust for Historic Preservation)

What an exciting book! Jan Albers is eloquent and expert. This is an important work both for its historical perspectives and considerable foresight. Opening it, I'm invariably absorbed.

(Edward Hoagland, author of Walking the Dead Diamond River)

A sense of place
By Toby Fenwick
Rarely has a volume of such physical grace and beauty contained such an important and topical message. I picked up my copy after returning to Vermont for a long weekend, and found the text both forceful, dynamic and informative, artistically combined with beautiful illustrations. Not a hagiography, and avoiding the temptation to airbrush the realities of Vermont into a pastiche of the country idyll in Yankee New England, Jan Albers has created an immensely readable but intellectually rigorous study of the development and land-use choices that Vermonters have made since the Abenaki were disturbed by white settlers.
This alone would be enough to qualify "Hands on the Land" for a place on the bookshelves of students of land-use and concerned citizens in rural and semi-rural areas everywhere. That this study is so accessible and lavishly illustrated, (much in the style of the latest offerings from the OUP History of England series) commends it to the broadest possible audience. In fact, I was so taken with this that I bought two - one for my mother, a native and transplanted Vermonter, and one for me - your bookshelf will be a richer and happier place with a copy!

Experiential Magnificence
By Robert Morris
This among the very few books I have experienced which combine exceptional beauty with information of urgent importance. As this volume indicates, no other state is lovelier than Vermont. Few others have a more interesting historty. But as Lyman Orton correctly indicates in the Foreword, the reader can also "take away some lessons about what determines land use, and what economic, social, cultural, and environmental consequences land-use choices may have." The reader is then urged to become involved in her or his community's efforts "to define its future, while realizing that the future's scenarios are written by today's actions." True enough. What's at stake? Examine the wealth of photographs provided in Chapter 1 and in subsequent chapters. Such natural beauty could indeed be compromised...as it has already been in so many other areas throughout the United States.
By examining the almost 400-year history of the Vermont landscape, Chapters 2-5, Albers suggests that the values of the past can be betrayed by what is done (and not done) now. Thus can the future be pre-determined, for better or worse. To have "hands on the land" is to have the power to determine its fate. That is as true of neighborhoods in the inner-city as it is of villages in Vermont. All are communities at risk.
Almost everyone will enjoy experiencing this beautiful as well as informative book. It is "must reading" for anyone involved in decisions which concern land use, and especially those decisions which have significant economic, social, cultural, and environmental consequences.

A must for planning boards
By frank w. gibson
Although subtitled, "A History of the Vermont Landscape," "Hands On The Land" is a book that should give everyone pause to think about what is happening to the landscape surrounding them, no matter where they live. Published for the Orton Family Foundation "to help the citizens of rural America define the future, shape the growth, and preserve the heritage of their communities" author Jan Albers accomplishes her task well. Her text is interesting, highly informative, easy to read and provocative for those concerned about "where do we go from here?" The illustrations (on almost every page)share top billing with the text. "Hands On The Land" should be "must reading" for all planning board members and conservationists to help them gain new perspectives about growth and control. If I could afford it I'd give a copy to every town official on Cape Cod.
