Roger C. Reed is Professor and Chair in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. He is widely known for his work on the physical metallurgy of the superalloys.

Good primer on superalloys

Just read this book and thought it did a very good job introducing a technical person to superalloys for gas turbine engines. Reed combines the technical and practical issues of these alloys in a very readable manner. He covers the relevant materials science topics, and also gets into the basics of processing, and applications like disks and blades. Being a scientist involved with high temperature materials for more than 20 years, and having published many papers in the subject area, I can vouch to the quality of the book and would recommend it to anyone working on or with high temperature alloys, or, to a student in ME, materials science or metallurgy. He also does a good job reporting on very recent efforts in areas like alloy development and life prediction.

Great book if it actually had all the words

Reed does a great job explaining the important aspects of superalloys. However, however edited this book did not do their job at all. In many cases is a blank space where a word or symbol should be (for example, "...these promote the formation of ordered phases such as the compounds Ni3(Al,Ta,Ti), known as ."). This also happens in equations and symbols so you can't actually use this book as a textbook because you don't know what equations are missing symbols and what ones are not, there's only a blank space where a viable or symbol should be. This doesn't just happen once or twice either, it happened 20-30 times in the first chapter alone. For the amount of money they are asking for this book, one would expect all the words to be in it. Let me be clear though, this is not a bad book. The information in it is very useful and written in a clear manner. If it had all the words and symbols, I would love this book. However, it doesn't and it makes me hate the book.
