An Irresponsible Text

As a professional hoodoo rootworker, academic, ethnographer, and U.S.-based African-American, I found this book very painful to read. Simply the fact there is a chapter titled "Hoodoo Gods" is indicative of this author's lack of research and, therefore, lack of real interest in the craft of hoodoo or sharing a true understanding of the practice from its origins, even if she *then* wanted to put her own spin on things. The "God" of Southern-based hoodoo is the Protestant Christian god - not the orishas or the lwa - and though many contemporary rootworkers find a way to mesh this purely folk magick system with their own cosmologies, the author does a disservice to readers in what is supposed to be an introductory text. Even if she is referencing the New Orleans-Style hoodoo practices in which the orishas and lwa are important, they are not considered gods. Again, the author makes no distinction.
And this is difficult to swallow because this (and innumerable other aspects of this text) in which the author blatantly states that she is assuming information about African-American history and traditional practices are *easily* researched online by any vaguely interested layperson. The methodology and intent of the text reek of colonialism.
The deepest pain in reading this text is that it represents just another promulgation of this oppressed and newly popular tradition to a wider audience in a watered down, fact-less, heartless manner. In taking on the task of writing a book about this tradition, this popular author chose to tell an oppressed people's story but forsook her responsibilities hands-down. This text is a sad cheap trick.
I would never practice another culture's spiritual traditions and then write a book on it without directly interfacing with the culture-bearers and making them a significant part of my writing the book and, were I to write such a book, I'd want to question "Why? What do *I* have to offer here?" Most likely it would be cultural translation, my social mobility, or other gifts associated with a privilege that I have, which would only deepen my sense of responsibility to the tradition and its keepers.
The lack of that sense of responsibility is tremendously evident here.

Not a great book

I decided on three stars instead of two because overall this is a decent introduction to hoodoo. It is watered down ALOT. There are aspects of hoodoo that are a bit much for the faint of heart (like graveyard dirt) that the author talks about substituting for. This is simply not something that is done. There certain ingredients used for different hoodoo tricks that cannot be substituted.
This book is also very thin. Not much information at all. Most of this information can be found with a Google search for hoodoo. I would recommend spending a little extra money and going ahead and getting a better hoodoo resource than this. Cat Yronwoode's stuff is amazing and traditional.

A good beginner's guide

Hoodoo, or ‘working the root’, is the generic term for an eclectic system of magic that draws on influences from all over the place and believed to have originated in the Mississippi Delta among the dense population of slaves from that area. From there it spread throughout the
southern States and north along the Mississippi as African-Americans left the Delta in the 1930’s and continuously developed from contact with other cultures, religions, and traditions. In Pagan Portals: Hoodoo Folk Magic, Rachel Patterson continues this tradition by incorporating the practice into her witchcraft. As she explains in her Introduction: “I am not a born and bred hereditary Hoodoo root worker living in Georgia or New Orleans (I hope to come back in another lifetime as one though…), but I have studied Hoodoo in great detail. This is MY interpretation of Hoodoo and how I work with it within the Craft. I have tried to make it as accurate as possible and have drawn on many sources as well as my own experiences. I have included many original recipes for oils, powders, incenses etc and have tried to be as traditional as possible with the ingredients for the well known ones, but other recipes included here are my own blends and therefore may not be so traditional.” Rachel provides us with a valuable introduction to the subject at a very basic level because the subject is far more complex than is often imagined. A perfect prologue for anyone wishing to discover more about ‘working the root’ and how to incorporate it into their own system of magic. Highly recommended.
