Malinowski takes the weight off Levon

Just finished Jamie Malanowski's book - a good read! Lots of smart sentences - the kind that make you stop and read again just for the pleasure of the phrasing or the insight. And he captures both the arc of Levon Helm's life and, through Helm, the arc of the times. As I read I pumped up the Band's greatest hits and soaked in a warm bath of good tunes and good words, a pretty special combination.

Spare bio fits Helm

I saw this e-single featured in Vanity Fair this morning and promptly downloaded it. Short enough to finish during a ride on the stationery bike, this tribute hits the high points of Levon's life without skimping on the counter pointing lows.
I never got to see a Midnight Ramble, but as a southerner born and bred, I know the kind of man Levon Helm was. Humble and wise, supremely talented in way you won't notice until you pay attention. The Book of Levon is just poetic enough to befit. Like Levon's life, it's not quite as long as you want it to be, but it burns brightly.
I'm off to find videos of Levon and the folks who pay him tribute.

Good read even if you're not a Helm buff

Inspiring, but not in the cheesy sense of the word. Worth reading, even if -- or especially if -- like me, your knowledge of Helm and The Band is limited to "The Weight" and "Cripple Creek" on a playlist, to learn about Helm's stoicism, and for the smart sentences noted by another reviewer. (There's one line of aphoristic wisdom in Chapter 1 that's worth the price of admission.)
