When Shua's anonymous protagonist checks into a hospital for routine tests to diagnose an undisclosed illness, he undergoes a series of endless, relentless examinations and an erroneous operation, all the time trying unsuccessfully to consult with the doctor who admitted him. After failing to obtain the obligatory release papers, the patient resigns himself to his fate as a permanent hospital resident. Except for the ending, this plot may strike a familiar chord to anyone who's ever had an extended hospital stay. In Shua's hands, however, it becomes a compelling political allegory in the tradition of Solzhenitsyn's Cancer Ward, though not so bleak. Shua, a popular, prolific author in her native Argentina, brilliantly exposes bureaucratic inefficiency and impersonality, and Argentine-literature specialist Foster has successfully rendered the black humor and satire of the work, though the pun of the Spanish original (I am patient as well as I am a patient) is lost. When a stress test in a hospital consists of scraping the old paint off the floor of the director's office, you might guess you are in an unusual hospital. Shua's mentally confused narrator-protagonist, however, is concentrating on more important things. He has his best photo of himself in his wallet so he can practice the correct expression. He likes visitors, but the most frequent one, his attractive cousin Pochi, is there primarily because she is having an affair with one of the doctors. The narrator enjoys the privilege of a private room, but he started out in the men's ward, Shua's picture of which is a masterful depiction of crowded-in beds, interminable card games, bad odors, and the best part--the song of welcome the patients all sing whenever a newcomer arrives. The narrator's thoughts about himself, the doctors, and the staff and his unquestioning acceptance of such things as having the bed from his apartment in the bathtub of his hospital room further demonstrate Shua's acute perceptiveness. Health care horrors

"Patient," by the Argentine writer Ana Maria Shua, is a surreal novel in which an unnamed first-person narrator checks into an unnamed hospital. He finds himself entangled in an authoritarian, bureaucratic nightmare. The novel has been translated into a stark English by David William Foster.
The novel's creepy, sometimes gruesome touches are oddly complemented by a current of ironic humor. Overall, the novel is strikingly similar in theme and tone to "Bedside Manners," by Luisa Valenzuela (another talented Argentine writer). If you're in the mood for a Kafkaesque satire, give "Patient" a read.

Good laugh, but made me think!

Guy has a slight problem and goes to hospital and can't get out. Being the wife of a doctor myself I really enjoyed this book but it had me thinking, too..
