Always a classic

The first installment of the most popular books, Harry Potter e' la pietra filosofale, is nearly perfect. The only quibble I have is that they've changed the names of many of the characters,(Example: Albus Dumbledore is Albus Silente etc.) which makes the reading a bit confusing if you've already read it in english, or seen the movies. The language isn't too difficult for the second language leaner and should be a cake walk for the native speaker. I learned dozens of new words and idioms and, after more than three years since living in Italy, relearned hundreds more. Great book! I hope to read the rest in Italian someday.

Great way to learn a little Italian!!!

This is just the right level for beginners of Italian. Easy reading, lots of conversation and idioms. I hope to graduate to some of the Italian masters some day, but for now this was a welcome addition to stuffy textbooks and conversation tapes. Most of the series is available in Italian through Amazon.

Too bad the movies don't have an Italian track with Italian subtitles to go with the books. Might be a lot easier to learn another language.

There's definitely not enough of me in this book, but I have a pretty good part in the second book of the series. I will be vacationing in Italy with many of my offspring, so having an Italian version of my favorite series really helps with learning the language.

This is the second book I have read from this author. This book does not disappoint. John MacArthur chooses twelve women from the Old and New Testament and does a deep study on them. He uses Scripture to back up his thoughts but adds his opinions for the reader to consider. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing these women in some different ways than just the usual teaching about them.

Without adequate standards, companies and their engineers developed techniques to calculate the wind loads for their facilities. The result is a wide variation in practice and inconsistent structural reliability. To encourage uniform wind load calculations, this report first reviews existing design practices for pipe racks and bridges, open and partially clad frame structures, vessels, tanks, steel stacks, cooling towers, and air coolers. Then, recommended guidelines are presented for design methods and the analytical determination of wind loads. Worked calculations for six example situations are included to illustrate the application of the recommended guidelines. This report is intended for use by engineers who design industrial facilities and assumes familiarity with Standard ASCE 7, Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures. It will also be useful to company managers who are responsible for establishing wind-load design and construction standards and to local building authorities.

Review of Wind Loads for Petrochemical Facilities

This is an excellent publication. It provides significant information on wind loads in an area that has been missing for years; mainly the petrochem/refining industries which contain structures not normally found in commercial building. The examples in the back of the publication are particularly useful and will directly help engineers working in the petrochem/refining and other related industries. I had the pleasure of actually meeting Dr. Samuel Amoroso (who is on the ASCE Task Committee on Wind-Induced Forces) during a seminar related to this subject. He was impressive and the course he taught was very informative - which made me go out and purchase this excellent publication. Thank ASCE and the members who strive to provide helpful data to the engineering community.

The answer, argues Juhani Pallasmaa, lies in the dominance of the visual realm in today’s technological and consumer culture, which has pervaded architectural practice and education. Whilst our experience of the world is formulated by a combination of five senses, much architecture is produced under consideration of only one – sight. The suppression of the other sensory realms has led to an impoverishment of our environment, causing a feeling of detachment and alienation.

what has been lost in architecture and why it should be back

During my 15 years of architectural education and some years of practice (both as architect and as 'explainer' of architecture) I have not yet encountered a book on architecture which has changed my view on architecture so dramatically.

Juhani Pallasmaa's book makes an excelent argument for retrieving in architecture that which seems to have been lost for a long time: the lived intelligence of the bodilly senses. In his book Pallasmaa gives an overview of the development of the occularcentrism which is dominating architecture (and pretty much every cultural aspect) in the Western world for centuries and goes on to show how this leads to an impoverment of the architectural experience (and with that the impoverment of our daily lifes).

The mix of theory, practice and convincing examples (ranging from architecture, art, cinema to literature and poetry together with the size (80 pages) makes the book easily readable, even for the less theoretical inclined reader. My advice: read it!

For those of you who are as impressed with this book as I am: there's another book by Pallasmaa with the title 'Encounters'(published by Rakennustieto Oy Rati, June 2005). This book features a collection of essay's which were written by the author over the last 20 years. This book is also about the phenomenology of architecture but, due to its size (app. 350 pages), gives a broader overview of the thinking and writing of Juhani Pallasmaa. It seems it is not available at Amazon but I hope they will put is on there list soon!

Updated Reprint of an Old Classic

Now back in print and updated into a second edition, this little book is a masterpiece on the differences between what we see in a set of architectural plans compared with what we sense when we walk into a building.

When we actually walk into a building, we are sensing the building with all of our senses. The smell of the still drying paint, the echo's from unexpected sources and more now have an impact that wasn't there in the plans.

This book consists of two essays:

The first surveys the historical development of the eye-centric orientation of our Western culture that began with the Greeks.

The second begins to lay out a way towards a multi-sensory approach to architecture that forms a sense of belonging and integration.

Lessons for students in architecture

As a student in architecture I would recommend this book to any person involved in any way of design. Not only buildings, because architecture also includes every aspect of the designing of space. This can therefore include industrial design, automotive design, etc. The book dicusses the interaction between people and spaces(buildings) using the human senses as medium - the way we see, feel, hear and experience a space. It is a fresh and captivating book and it is a real pitty that it is out of print.

This presentation of Native art is s fine history of dolls wrapped in a purpose and skill that continues into the present. The large format allows us to see the attention to detail found in the dolls. A slim book, the information Lee and her collaborators have gathered will help Dr Marion Talbot's memoir present a better sense of Native community in her own book.
