(3.5) Fascinating book about the myth of Melusine

This book presents itself as a scholarly look at the figure of Melusine, best-known as the mysterious heroine of a medieval French fairy tale, but with ties to major goddesses of the ancient world. The author focuses mainly on Melusine's story as presented in A.S. Byatt's novel _Possession_, but also ties in earlier versions of the tale and other modern novelizations.
Alban's thesis is that Melusine is a survival of the ancient Great Goddess. This book is at its best when comparing Melusine to various ancient goddesses. For example, Alban's comparison of Melusine and Medusa, both snake-ladies whom one could not gaze upon with impunity, is fascinating. Also mentioned is Melusine's similarity to Echidna, who like Melusine was a bearer of strange reptilian children. Alban also studies the figures of Eve, Lilith, Persephone, and many others. It's jaw-dropping, at least to a reader like me who is obsessed with the Melusine story, how many parallels there really are between her tale and the older myths.
The downfall of this book is its unquestioning embrace of the "prehistoric matriarchy" theory. No one really knows whether people in ancient times were peaceful, feminist, "gylanic" tribes worshipping a single Great Mother. The theory has not been disproven; however, it is far from proven. No one really knows. But I think this book would have come across as more scholarly if it had presented the matriarchy ideas as theory and not as fact.

Interesting and Factual

Although a political science textbook may often seem dry and boring, this text is actually somewhat engaging for the collegiate reader. I would recommend professors to use this for introductory courses to comparative politics. It is a bit of an older edition, however, so i you want the latest information, you may want to check out one with a more recent copyright date.

Well-researched and written

First, an upfront disclaimer: I was an early reviewer of the draft of this book and I'm cited extensively within. Having said that, I find "Strategic Communication..." to be the most comprehensive and accurate book available on this topic. Paul has done extensive research and tapped into plethora experts and practitioners to accurately protray both the concept and the process that has come to be known as strategic communication.

Three audiences will benefit from this effort: government and military practitioners; academicians, particularly those teaching at professional military education colleges and institutions and; government and military leaders. That latter is perhaps most important. The information age has launched strategic communication to the forefront of enabling success of both policy and military objectives. On the other hand, strategic communication, if misunderstood or misapplied can have a correspondingly catastrophic impact. Prior to publication of this book there was no single source to reference that considers the totality of both these challenges and opportunities. Chris Paul provides a real service in that regard.

This is a book well worth reading.

Best Bike Maintenance Book You Can Buy

I normally don't do reviews but I have fallen in love with this book! I have owned several bike maintenance books such as Park Tool's Big Blue Book and Bicycling's Complete Guide to Maintenance and Repair and they don't even come close to the usefulness of this book! I can attribute this to several things:
-Zinn's diagrams and tables are extremely helpful over the typical photo; it allows a more in-depth view of the component and the illustrations are a refreshing take on a maintenance guide.
-The book is organized well and includes tidbits only a master mechanic like Zinn would know from his years of experience. Repairs are organized by skill level that corresponds to a specific set of necessary tools and experience. He also lists the tools needed for the project.
-His writing has opened my eyes to the fact that most repairs don't need to be perfect; sometimes yanking, fiddling, and improvising is necessary to make your bike run perfectly. Before I was under the impression that most professional mechanics were precise and careful, but I see that their method is not so different from the less-than-perfect method I was already using.

His writing makes bike mechanics not only interesting but even fun! I find myself reading The Art of MTB Maintenance before bed and in my spare time. I've been inspired to tackle repairs I once found daunting and I am learning more in a shorter period of time than I could have ever done with comparable books. I highly recommend this book to every mountain biker as a staple in their repair station.

Covers 99.5% of all the repairs and info that mountain riders will ever need or use.

My family owns seven bikes including my two very nice high end dual suspension carbon fiber mountain bikes and I am at about the advanced home mechanic level of expertise. I clean, rebuild or install my own headsets, bottom brackets, hub bearings, disk brakes and fork internals. I even build my own wheels occasionally. I however, am not a shop mechanic, and I do not chase bottom brackets, weld frames or align dropouts. With that said, I like to have as a backup to the internet, one complete reference for everyday maintenance. The Zinn book fits that bill perfectly.

His book covers all the basics from purchasing the right tools to basic maintenance to emergency repairs. (I like his recommended tool lists more than those covered at the Park Tools website or the lists compiled by United Bicycle Institute) He also covers roughly 99% or more of the repair procedures that any home mechanic might need to attempt. The book even covers wheel building (which bike purists would say is holy ground), frame alignment, proper rider fit and has a decent set of torque tables. The repair procedures are broken down by difficulty in each chapter into Levels I, II and III. For example, a Level I repair would entail a procedure that a newbie mechanic could tackle (like changing a tire or adjusting a seatpost), a Level II would be something more for the home mechanic with some experience (like installing a new front derailleur) and a Level III repair would be for the advanced home mechanic or shop guru (like facing a bottom bracket).

There are a few areas where Zinn does not go into much detail, but these tend to be rare topics that even the experienced shop mechanic is probably only going to see a few times a year. Perhaps the only weakness of the book is that for a few of the more detailed procedures, some more photos or diagrams would be helpful. For myself, I was fine with the amount of diagrams but I can see where a newer home mechanic might appreciate it. I am also glad he tends to update this work about once every three to five years. Will be waiting for the next release, and a great guide for more than 99% of home mechanics. Five stars

Outstanding resource

Outstanding resource book. I have recently started riding full suspension mountain bikes and the book has really helped with some routine maintenance items that I did not have to take to the bike shop to have the work completed. Highly recommend the book.

Book Information In the 19th Century a European fascination with the exotic Orient generated what has come to be known as "Orientalism". The costumes, landscapes and townscapes of the Ottoman, Arab and Mogul worlds inspired painters ranging from Delacroix and Ingres to David Roberts and even Matisse. When expressed in architecture and design, buildings and gardens, this phenomenon became known as the Moorish Style.
This style has been used in a vast variety of ways throughout the western world, appearing in gentlemen's clubs and synagogues, cinemas (often called "The Alhambra") and Tuscan villas. In this magnificently illustrated survey, Miles Danby examines the roots of the style in art and architecture throughout the Islamic world. He discusses the factors of space and pattern and the structural and decorative elements that are commonly found in mosques and palaces, whether in Mogul India, Ottoman Turkey or Moorish Spain.
Of all the buildings key to the style, the Alhambra in Granada is perhaps the most important. Expertly recorded by the great 19th-century designer, Owen Jones, its features were to inspire both public and private building into the 20th Century, and make concrete the exotic dreams of a number of wealthy aesthetes. Unfortunately unreadable

So sad, a very nice looking book with an interesting approach -- looking at Islamic art and architecture as seen through Western eyes over the last few hundred years. The book showcases some excellent reproductions of fabulous old paintings, historic photographs, and contemporary photographs. Why sad? because the narrative text is printed in light gray in a very skinny sans serif type that swims before my eyes. I admit I don't have perfect vision, but I can read most books perfectly well. In Moorish Style I can read a paragraph or two under a strong light, but it is so agonizing (actually nauseating) I soon give up.
Curse the art director who came up with this great idea!! .... Books have to be more than just pretty.
If it weren't for this 'slight' problem, I would give it four, maybe five stars. For the excellent graphics, I give it three.
